Golf Boss Montgomery Says Gables Open Strokes Ahead

An estimated 10,000 persons witnessed the Coral Gables Open Golf Tournament which ended Sunday when Canadian George Knudson scored 273 on 72 holes at Biltmore Golf course to win the $2,800 top prize. Gay Brewer Jr., winner of the West Palm Open which preceded the local tourney, came in one stroke behind Knudson to take second place and $1,900 of the $20,000 total prize money. General Chairman John M. Montgomery was elated with the large turnout - 5,000 the last day - and the fine weather that held throughout the four-day event and the Pro-Am tourney that preceded it. "I presume we'll make some money," said the former mayor, who was aided by George James, co-chairman. "We are indebted to the 150 men who sponsored the tournament," said Montgomery. These persons paid out $150 as patrons to help raise the $20,000 to insure the financial success of the tourney. The City of Coral Gables, which co-sponsored the event with the Professional Golf Association, gives financial backing to the event and has made up past deficits. Montgomery, who said he would step down and let new blood run the tourney next year if approved by the City Commission, was approached by a Canadian group to run a tourney there. He turned them down, he said. The December date here was labeled fine by Montgomery, but he said a January or February date would be better because it would come at the beginning of the PGA series and at the height of the winter season.

Biltmore Granada Get Thanks

George James, co-chairman of the Coral Gables PGA tournament, said he wanted to thank several local associations who helped make the tourney-which attracted the nation's top golfers-a success. James thanked the Biltmore and Granada Men's and Women's Golf Associations and the Tenth Holers, a group of golfers who play regularly on the Granada Course. The co-chairman said members of these groups helped sell tickets. They also controlled the gallery and generally marshalled the area.

Youth Center Vandalism Inspected by Commission

Extensive vandalism at the War Memorial Youth Center was inspected by the Coral Gables City Commission Monday as part of a tour of City facilities. Other damage reported by the members of the association in a recent meeting with the Commission was also observed by the Commission. Theft of equipment was also involved. Damage included holes punched through ceilings, servicemen's nameplanes removed from a memorial plaque, bent ornamental metal work throughout the building, damage lockers and miscellaneous vandalism. The damage prompted Mayor Robert L. Searle to remark that if a way can be found to break something, some boy will do it. Commissioners conferred with Youth Center Director Jeannette Hunt about the damage with an eye to repair and possibility adopting new procedures for reporting and repair.
