Yule Blooms on Patio At Veterans Hospital

By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Society Editor Take some 50 middle-aged (and older) women in starched blue and white uniforms and matching caps, milling around one of the beautiful patios of the old Biltmore Hotel, now the Coral Gables Veterans' Hospital, and you have a picture of a group of dedicated women to a yearly task, the annual Christmas Gift Shop. The women are members of auxiliaries of the various American Legion Posts, including Post 98 of Coral Gables. Prevailing in decor were the glittering white four-foot Christmas trees. Garlands of spruce gave a festive air to this patio. One minute the tables were bare and in the next these ladies were pulling out great boxes of the gifts, all new, stored under the counter. They arranged them in quick order. It was hard to hold anyone down for a minute to talk. We did, however, chat with Mrs. Mable Francis, the hospital representative for the Department of Florida (with her offices in the building), who immediately said: "We are the only auxiliary fortunate to have our display out of doors. And the only one to have our Christmas' display out doors. "This day is nationwide and statewide with three Florida veteran hospitals." Mrs. Edna Patterson, a petite, elderly person with bright blue eyes matching her uniform, said this is her 23rd year of helping with this event and she wouldn't miss it. "Do you know," she whispered, "I own an Eastman Kodak. I've had it for 40 years, and it still works?" How are the gifts distributed? First, carts of gifts are taken in for the bed patients to make their selections. Then the patients able to walk, come and make their selections. All gifts (to wives, and children) and mothers of veterans are holiday tagged, wrapped and sent.

Cuban Records in Gables And Police Knew It

The fact that a Cuban anti-Castro organization's records were once stored here was known to Coral Gables police, Chief William Kimbrough said Monday. But beyond that Kimbrough had no comments on the legal battle between the various members of Democratic Revolutionary Front over the more than six tons of records. Felix Gutierrez Fernandez, a Cuban millionaire, is seeking in Dade District Court to recover the records seized at 3155 Ponce de Leon Blvd. following the abortive April 1960 invasion of Cuba. Judge Lucien C. Proby Jr., however has turned down Gutierrez. "I intend to appeal the case," Owen Freed, Gutierrez' attorney, said Tuesday. Gutierrez, who operated Kinlef Corp., an import-export business to Cuba, claims that his own business records are among the Front's papers, Freed said. The plaintiff maintains he never belonged to the Front but allowed it to use his facilities. Sheriff's deputies, armed with a warrant, raided the Ponce address last May 3, and seized the records.
