City's Program Wins PR Award
The City of Coral Gables has received the Gold Award of the Florida Public Relations Association for the "Best Institutional Project Contributing to Public Understanding and Confidence in the Institution and Its Services" for 1960-61. Presentation of the award was made at the annual banquet of the Association in Tampa last week. Bert Burris, advertising consultant for the City of Coral Gables, accepted the award on behalf of the city. According to Alan B. Fields Jr., of Pensacola, chairman of the Awards Committee, Coral Gables won the award because "it is an unusual example of a small city employing professional public relations guidance to coordinate a wide variety of publicity and advertising efforts." In his presentation remarks, Fields made reference to Coral Gables' public relations campaign as placing emphasis on civic beauty, promotion of retail business and extensive youth activities. He also mentioned its progress in the People-to-People program, and its information program to keep its citizens informed about their local government . . . "the end result being a respected and favorable image." The 1960-61 program upon which this Award was based was considered so successful by the Coral Gables City Commission that a substantially increased appropriation was made for continuing the program in 1961-62.
