Gables Fire Chief Warns Don't Fool, Play It Cool at Yule

If you are one of 45 million Americans planning Christmas trees, there are a few basic rules advocated by Gables Fire Chief Paul Matheson that might keep you from having a serious fire this se n. One good rule for yule, Matheson points out, is to leave your tree outside until ready to use it. Once you're ready, get a pail or other container for water. You'll be amazed how much water a tree will absorb, keeping it moist and lessening the fire danger. approved lights. And don't overload circuits. Electric trains look real nice under trees, but a spark could turn Christmas into Fourth of July. Keep the tree away from radiators and fire places or heat. Candles, of course, are out, and you should use flameproof decorations, underwriter Going away? — Don't leave the lights on. And when your tree gets dry, discard it. Metal trees, while they might not burn, present an additional hazard — shock. The best way to light them is from an external source. Frayed cords can make contact with the tree. If you are planning outside decorations, make sure they are designed for outside use, the chief said. Wrappings from gifts and empty boxes also make excellent fuel for fire to feed on, Matheson said. Get rid of them as soon as possible.
