Swimming Coach's Life Aw, Bill, Merthiolate Stings!

By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter "You're forever bandaging some little kid," said the husky Texan, "and a lot of the parents come to trust you, to trust your judgment." So says Bill Reynolds, a 27-year-old who hopes to enter law school at the University of Miami, who is swimming coach at Riviera Country Club. The ruggedly handsome bachelor said he must sometimes be a second father to the children. "Yeah, you have to be," he said. "Especially when you put the merthiolate on. It stings. "And I sometimes find myself tutoring the members' children, mostly in biology and math. That's what I know best." Bill almost didn't get this job last February. Because he was new and couldn't find work here, he resigned himself to return to Dallas to work for his dad, a pharmacist. "But the day before I left," he recalled, "the phone rang. It was the agency (employment) and they said Mr. Wall (Arnold Wall, Riviera's manager) wanted to talk with me." After the club had interviewed him four times and studied his background, notably his work as athletic director for SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers, Europe) and as a physical education instructor at West Point, they gave him the job. Bill finished his coffee and ambled to poolside. "I'm going to have to shave," he said, glancing at his watch. He had a date for lunch, a pretty young thing, a psychology major at the UM. And so goes the life of this country club swimming coach who almost drowned twice when he was a boy.
