‘We Had a Cocktail, Said What We Wanted;’ A Deal

Bent H. Kaaber. What's he like? At 36 and in the United States only 11 years, he's just paid $105,000 for the much-publicized home of the James Cerniglias at 701 S. Alhambra Cir. As you watch the native of Copenhagen light up a Marlboro and prop his feet on his highly-polished desk, you find out he's easy-going, but knows what he wants and how to get it. His early life in Copenhagen is an example. In the early 40's he worked his way up in a hardware store from apprentice to clerk to owner. When World War II broke across the face of Europe, he joined the Dutch underground and with the same vigor as in business blew up Nazi railroad tracks and helped other Danes flee across the Baltic Sea to Sweden. In 1950 Kaaber came to the United States and Coral Gables. He spoke no English. His job then was painting commercial signs. So he went to night school for four nights a week for a year. Not satisfied with his progress, he quit and studied the language for two years at the University of Miami. Not satisfied with his job, he quit sign painting and studied real estate. He took the exam and passed it. Today, he's married to a pretty blonde from Tennessee, Edythe, and is the father of three children, Debra, 8; Lori, 7; and Bent, Jr., 3. Kaaber can afford to pay more than $100,000 for that house which has attracted wide attention for the Christmas decorations the Cerniglias have put up each year on the home and their lawn. Kaaber is highly successful in real estate and has also, and a pleased smile crosses his face as he tells you, invested in real estate. "We had wanted to buy that house so many times," he said. "And the kids were crazy about it. All those trees in the front yard they could climb in. "So one night, we went over to see the Cerniglias. We had a cocktail and he told me what he wanted. I told him what I wanted." Kaaber, as typical with his casual nature, flipped a hand. "By 9 o'clock the next morning, we closed the deal." KAABER AND HIS FAMILY (INSET)

CG Closed 1961 As An Excellent Year For Safe Driving

Last year was one of the safest for driving in recent years, according to Coral Gables police Department statistics released this week. Only two persons were killed in 1,585 reported accidents. The year before, five persons were killed and the average in recent years has been three or four fatalities. There were 1,707 traffic accidents in 1960. The only blot on the accident picture was a jump in the number of injuries — from 578 to 617. December followed a similar trend. There were no fatalities, and 66 injured in 137 accidents. The same month in 1960 produced one death, 170 accidents and 64 injuries.

Ida Dynney Hurt After Car Mishap

A woman who struck a concrete street marker while driving on Red Road Jan. 4 wound up at South Miami Hospital for emergency treatment. Ida S. Dynney, 58, of 1520 Ancona Ave., told William A. Wiggins that she swerved to avoid a truck while driving south on Red Road. Her compact car went off the road on the east side of Red, went over the Albenga Avenue intersection marker, and dragged it 22 feet before coming to a stop. The front and underside of the car were torn up.
