with Ed Knight THE NEW YEAR is here, the old one is gone, the holidays are over (yes, I'm glad) and everything is look-see ahead at what 1962 will bring. Before I go any farther in this new year, I'll have to remember to write 1962 instead of 1961 on my checks. — — — SINCE EVERYONE else is looking ahead at the new year, let us do the same. But not before we take a fleeting glance back to 1961 to see what were the big storeis in our area and how they will compare to 1962. TOP STORY in the southwest was the opening of the Palmetto Expressway from Tamiami Trail southward to South Dixie Highway. Traffic relief, convenience and speed were the direct results of the Palmetto Expressway. But time will show that we will reap greater benefits from the expressway. OTHER TOP stories of last year were the beginning of construction on Westbrooke Country Club on Tamiami Trail and the opening of Zayre's Dept. store. WHILE THESE stories of construction were the big ones of 1961, they will continue over into 1962 and be the bigger stories of this year. Both Westbrooke Country Club and Dadeland are due to open this year, both with much fanfare. BUT 1962 will be twice as big a year as 1961 if prospects come true. Since Dade has gone into the transit business, both west and south Dade should feel the difference in a matter of months. IN RECREATION, according to County Manager Irving McNayr, 1962 should see a realization of plans for a network of regional parks and neighborhood playgrounds, some of which will be in south and west Dade. IN SCHOOLS, we've about caught up with the demand for elementary and junior high schools. West Dade will get a new high school on 89th Ave. in the Coral Park section. The school board already has purchased the land. But the county won't have money for consturction until the 1962-1963 budget. LOOK, ALSO, for a decision to come soon on whether South Dade will get the new Aerojet-General plant, which, along with the Ludwig oil refinery, will bring industry to South Dade and probable changes to west and South Dade. 1962 WILL BE a better economic year than 1961. There will be more of everything, except unemployment. People will have more money to spend — and save — and it will bring prosperity to many a merchant who nearly pushed the panic button in 1960 and 1961. ★ ★ ★ HERE AND THERE — South Miami merchants report one of their best Christmases. The reason? The elimination of parking meters from South Miami streets ... Know why they call Miracle Mile Miracle Mile? It's a miracle if you can find a parking space there ... Book is being made on how long Christmas trees will remain in the parkways before the county picks them up.

'HURRY UP and move' says Ed Hall, in his middle 80's, who played shuffleboard the other day when the cool weather made most folks turn to their coats and hot water bottles. Hall, 7897 SW 70th St., was playing with his fellow All States Friendship Club pals, who meet weekly at Salvadore Park in the Gables.

Turned Down Coin Laundry

A coin-operated launderette proposal on the northeast corner of Red Road and San Ignacio Avenue was turned down by the Zoning Board Monday following a public hearing. The board voted 3-1 to deny the request of Sheldon Dubler to change zoning from one type of commercial zoning to another to permit the new business.
