How to Pretty Up Apartment Areas Is Under Study
A pilot street will be set up in the apartment district to work out a better way of handling trash pick ups and give the area a spic and span appearance. The City is working on a landscaped bin idea to take care of the unusually large amounts of trash resulting in apartment areas. Possibly two of these bins would be placed in each block, Mayor Robert L. Searle said recently following a conference with members of the Apartment Owners Association. Robert L. Brinkman, president of the association, said his group would cooperate with the City in keeping parkways clean. The association is also seeking a new recreation area, possibly at the site of the old Antilla Hotel on Ponce de Leon Boulevard. This would include pool, cabanas, recreation room available on a fee system to the public. No action has been taken on this proposal. New and additional street lighting, something the association asked for, will be started later this year, according to City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. The feasibility of uniform setbacks on parking buttons is also being considered following the group's request. One area in which the association failed to score was on its request for city-paid national advertising.

Drug Case Still Gables Mystery
State Bureau of Narcotic agents believe that approximately 100 boxes of drugs found along the Coral Gables Waterway Dec. 31 were dumped there by someone who came into their possession illegally and feared getting caught. "It sounded intriguing to begin with," said Ray Bellinger, inspector in charge of the Southeast Office of the Bureau of Narcotics. But the investigation has run into a blind alley, Bellinger said. None of the boxes contained narcotics, but they did contain benzadrine, phenobarbital and sulfadiazine, two of which are habit forming barbiturates, he said. Bellinger speculated that the boxes were originally designed to be used in survival or first aid kits. Normally, barbiturates and narcotics are discarded by incineration, Bellinger said. Whoever discarded them thought they would sink, but instead they floated and wound up on the banks near the Sunrise Harbour boat launching ramp. They were found there by Robert Peterson, 16, of 6821 Camarin St., his brother, Gerald, 13, and Richard Wall, 13, of 6821 Cook Rd., Sunday. The thief entered through a garage door and ransacked the Cook home, Coral Gables police reported.

A 12-year-old boy who attempted to break up a dog fight was at South Miami Hospital Saturday being treated for four deep lacerations. Robert G. Robinson, whose father recently escaped from a Bolivian jail after his plane was forced down by fighters, required 15 stitches to his left leg. The youngster, who lives at 1043 Alhambra Cir., was walking his dog in the 700 block of North Greenway Drive, according to Gables police, when two other dogs attacked his dog. Young Robinson attempted to break up the fight and was bitten.
