Politickin in SM As Election Nears

In what appears at this time to be a quiet election, South Miami voters will go to the polls next month to elect three Council members and a mayor. The election figures to be a subdued one because of the lack of issues and the fact that all three Council incumbents and Mayor Paul U. Tevis are running for reelection. Council members running for reelection include Mrs. Jean H. Willis, 5781 SW 82nd St.; Wallace Rinz, 6510 SW 64th Ave., and Joseph Kline, 6001 Twin Lakes Dr. Mrs. Willis and Kline already have qualified. Rinz and Mayor Tevis intend to qualify before the Jan. 14 deadline. For the first time since 1958, Mayor Tevis, whose term runs for two years, will be opposed by at least one candidate and perhaps others. Already having qualified for the mayor's race is Edward C. Vining, 7112 SW 65th Ave., an attorney and a South Miamian since 1959. Aside from the incumbents, the only other candidates to have qualified is Col. C. Ray Gibbs, 7630 SW 64th St., a retired U.S Army officer and a member of several city boards. South Miamians who wish to become candidates have until midnight, Jan. 14, to do so. This is 30 days before the election, to be held the second Tuesday in February, or on Feb. 13 Qualification fee is $30 for councilman or mayor. The two highest vote getters in the Council race will get four year terms. The third highest will get a two year term. Holdover Councilmen who received four year terms in the 1960 elections are George Gibbons and Ed Corley. According to City Manager C. B. Petry, who also serves as city clerk, there were 3,710 registered voters in the 1960 elections. Of that number some 1,200 turned out for the election. He expects about the same number of voters in this election. South Miami Council Tuesday night of last week passed a resolution calling for the election, providing for the city's fire station as the polling site and naming poll inspectors and the election clerk. The clerk is Pencie Melton. The inspectors are Carrie Lou Shelley, Florence Parrish, Helen Brooke, Olive Galloway, Juel Tatum, Clarice Samolik, Mary Wyatt, Elizabeth Newton, Eliza Jane Thompson and Bessis M. Atwood. In other action of a short meeting, Council: GRANTED a rear setback variance to Robert M. Anderson for the erection of a home in Ludlam Estates. READ a letter from the South Miami Chamber of Commerce asking the city's help in assisting the Chamber in the erection of Christmas lights on the city's main streets next year. AUTHORIZED City Manager C. B. Petry to write a resolution to be acted upon at the next Council meeting designation quarterly audit reports rather than a final, year-end audit report.

Missing Silver?

If your initials are either C.M.C. or C.C.M and you are missing silverware and jewelry — try the Coral Gables police. They recently recovered a gold woman's bracelet with initials C.C. M., another bracelet, a bottle of Arpege perfume, and several articles of sterling silverware, mostly spoons. The solen goods were obtained by police after a Goulds, Fla., Negro, James Brown, was picked up trying to pawn them off for liquor at Piper's Liquor Store, 455 South Dixie Hwy. Brown is serving 15 days for vagrancy, but refuses to tell police where and how he got possession of the property.
