Coral Gables Federal Cuts 6 to 5 Stories But to Widen Building

Coral Gables Federal Savings and Loan Association got approval Tuesday to build a five-story addition on a 50-foot piece of land alongside its present building at Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Andalusia Avenue. The financial institution had earlier received approval for the five-story addition on a 25-foot lot, but subsequently acquired an additional 25 feet Coral Gables Federal, back in May 1961, asked the City Commission to go six stories but the Commission approved only five stories. It said it held up the sixth story until completion of a high rise building study by Rader and Associates. The study is soon to be released. The firm decided to go ahead on five stories and acquired more land to expand horizontally. Second reading of the ordinance allowing Coral Gables Federal to go five stories on the new basis is scheduled for next week. A building permit could be issued 30 days after that date. Special City Commission permission is required on all buildings over three stories.

We'll Be Represented At Easter in Holy Land

Coral Gables will have at least two families representing it Easter Week in the Holy Land. They are Mr. and Mrs. John T. Watters, 3001 Segovia St., and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Elwell. Mrs. Elwell is the former Miss Louan Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest P. Jones, 738 Santander Ave. until told by The Times, neither knew the other would be there. The Watterses leave here March 15 for an extended trip. They'll drive to Akron, Ohio, to visit a daughter and sail from New York April 2, debarking in Naples. They'll be in the Holy Land for nine days and return to Rome where they'll pick up their car. Watters has been busy the last week getting his Nash tuned up and particularly wanted to get a bug out of the ignition. The latter fault has led him on occasion to have to raise the hood and start the car with the aid of a coin. "Much like a thief does," he commented wryly. For insurance, he's got a box of spare parts in his trunk. The Watters family has no scheduled itinerary for Europe; they'll just follow their desires. Mrs. Watters' late mother was a native of France and they'll be sure to visit relatives there. They'll leave Cannes for home on the USS Constitution, embarking on July 4, the date of Watters' 71st birthday. They arrive in New York July 14. While the Watterses are away, their home will be occupied by a nephew and his family, John W. Watters, a Marion, Ohio, attorney. Later, they'll be visited by his brothers, Robert Watters, with General Electric Co., and Dr. Edward Watters, with a competitor, Westinghouse Corp. The Ernest Jones family is looking forward to their daughter and son-in-law's return to this country in June. The husband is studying for his doctorate of theology at Tubingen University in Germany. The Elwells have been there since last August and were married two and a half years ago. Louan graduated from Coral Gables High School in 1957. Her brother Eric will graduate this year. The occasion for the Elwells' being in the Holy Land is a month-long tour there, arranged through the university. When they return to the United States, he will enroll for further study at the University of Chicago.
