Gablegrams

by helen reynolds society editor | Mrs. S. Laurence Schroll, 521 Aragon Ave., and Mr. Schroll, a retired Internal Revenue Service official, get the most interesting letters from their son, Lieut. Robert L. Schroll, a U.S. Army Helicopter pilot who is returning to the States after 16 months in the Orient, mostly in Seoul, Korea. He writes that he will never regret this trip, his first mission from mid-winter cold in Korea to tropical Okinawa. The first surprise was to meet a "face" from home, John Mertz. The gondola ride to Mt. Fuji in Japan was on a rare clear day; and the view magnificent. On one of his trips when he was taking pictures of the native shrines, a group of school children, all of whom could say "hello," asked for his autograph. So he signed 52 schooltablets. Lieutenant Schroll, after a visit with his parents in the Gables, will see more service with the 82nd Airborne Division. ★ ★ ★ "Two down and none to go" could be a likely-golf score for Esther Parson, 839 Catalonia Ave. Esther had a physical bout and Franklin had a heart attack. Esther, who is chairman of publicity for the Coral Gables Country Club Women's Golf Association, says her committee did a swell job in getting the weekly scores (golf) of the club into print, while she was ill. Franklin, a local attorney, is still convalescing at home, and Esther knows he is improving because he tells her how to run the house. "Me," she said, "who has been running the house for 31 years." ★ ★ ★ When the very first grandchild arrives, it's time for a party. So, Mrs. M. L. Godelph, 6811 Corsica St., will entertain at a baby shower Saturday afternoon, honoring "grandmother-to-be, Mrs. Wesley L. Peckham," 1160 South Alhambra Cir. Gay Jr., now Mrs. John Mounts, and John are expecting their first child in April, so appropriately enough, it is called an April shower. ★ ★ ★ Howard Helfrich, member of the Coral Gables Rotary Club, has a habit of walking. He believes you live longer if you walk; he also is a firm believer that you live longer on the East coast. He says: "People come down to the West Coast to die; to the East Coast to live longer." He and Polly passed their 58th wedding anniversary in February, and what did they do? "Took a nice long walk." Howard has been retired for 10 years.
