Rogers' Office Building Idea Has Rough Going at City Hall

Former City Commissioner Ed Rogers ran into more opposition from the City Commission Tuesday. The occasion was when an ordinance came up on second reading for a change of zoning to permit him to consolidate a piece of property on Alhambra Plaza and Merrick Way. Last week, the Commission had voted 3-0, with Commissioners Joe Murphy and Franklin Evans abstaining, to change part of the tract from apartment zoning to commercial was placed on first reading. This week Murphy and Evans again slowed up proceedings when two different ordinances—one drawn up by City Attorney Ted Semple and City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr.—were presented to the Commission. Rogers became angry as the Commission discussed iron-clad conditions that would have reverted the land to its original zoning if Rogers' plan to erect a multi-story office building fails to materialize. He and Commissioner Murphy tangled when Rogers asked the Commission to delay his request and Murphy said the delay was caused by a desire to get things done in an orderly fashion. "If it was left up to you I don't think it would ever be done in an orderly fashion," Rogers said. Mayor Searle stopped any further talk when he ruled Rogers out of order. The real estate man had stood up at his seat in the audience to make his remarks. The Commission then decided to defer the matter until next week and voted 3-0, with Murphy and Evans again abstaining, on another proposal by Rogers to close off an alley. Rogers wants to build a six-story building. Gulf Oil Corp. would be a tenant. ROGERS MURPHY . . . a difference

Help For Displaced Duffers

Members of Riviera Country Club have been offered the services of the Biltmore and Granada Golf Courses while their own fairway is being rebuilt. The City Commission Monday authorized City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. to offer $15 a month family rates to residential members of the club and $21 to non-resident members. Riviera's course is expected to be closed down part of May, June and July the Commission was told.

KOREAN MISSIONS

A story of missions in Korea will be presented by the Rev. Paul W. Haines at Wesley Methodist Church, 133 Ponce de Leon Blvd. Sunday at 11 a.m. Reverend Haines, missionary under The Oriental Missionary Society, recently returned from Korea.
