Questionnaires Missed Wide Area
By BECKY DOYLE QUINN Times Reporter Metro Transit Authority's bus service survey fell 30 blocks short of the petitioned survey area "because it was obvious from personal observation that the area beyond SW 87th Avenue doesn't have enough potential to support bus service," said Don Wallace, superintendent of transportation Monday. Designed to determine the necessity and possibility of extended bus service in the Southwest area, the survey covered the area bordered by Tamiami Trail on the North, Miller Road on the South, Red Road on the East, and Galloway (SW 87th Ave.) on the West. The petition requesting the survey asked that it cover not only this area, but the area from 87th Avenue out to 117th Avenue. "But this is out of the question," said Wallace. "We are not trying to make money, but it just isn't good business to provide service where the area is not able to support it, to pay the operating expenses." "We covered the area that we thought would be capable of justifying extended routes, and we have analyzed the results of that survey. The next step is to look over the terrain of the land by automobile to see just where we could send busses." Lee Davis, Coral Gables Transportation Director, said that he didn't know how much of the area the survey covered. "They said that they went out to 87th Avenue, but some of the residents say they didn't get the questionaires," he said. "We're working on the thing now," said Davis. "We are confering with Metro on what routes can be set up." "We're trying to cooperate with Metro, and it looks like they're cooperating with us. That's about all I know." Wallace said that new routes are undetermined as yet. "We still have a lot of work to do until that is decided. We don't know how far service will be extended, or even who will be doing it. It may be Coral Gables. We're working on it."
