Can't Cope with Communism / Liberalism Found Wanting by Conservatives

The University of Miami campus is the scene of a big swing back to conservatism in political thinking, Antoni E. Gollan, U. of M. student leader told the Riviera Women's Republican Club June 14. Of the 10 per cent of American college students who do care about politics, most are liberal-left, said Gollan, "primarily because the only scholastic authorities that have been available to them — professors and textbooks — are liberal, and because they are constantly saturated with liberal shibboleths — such as 'The United Nations is the last best hope for peace.' " "I prefer to believe that the U.N. is the last best hope for Adlai Stevenson," he said. CONSERVATISM PICKS UP Now there is a "new attraction to conservatism making "I think we Republicans — and, I trust, conservatives — have to admit that Kennedy has kept his word. He said he'd get things moving again, and he has. The Harvard faculty has moved to Washington. The Communists have moved through Laos into South Viet Nam. And, as they witness his performance, his countrymen are moved to tears." who lives at 807 Messina Ave., said the University's Young Americans for Freedom movement began this year with three members. "Today we have 40;" he said, "and the new president of the YAF chapter at U.M. predicts one hundred by the end of next year. "Our campus bi-weekly publication, The Campus Conservative, has an on-campus circulation of well over 2,000, and the undying hatred of the University's Department of Government... "The task young conservatives have set for themselves is not enviable; it is to eventually change the national political climate by changing student opinions now. "From our vantage point at the University of Miami, we have some fair understanding of what that task demands. One thing is patience. "Several months ago," he said, "the University YAF chapter picketed in front of the Court House on the issue of nuclear testing. We were opposed by a pacifist group composed of some students, but mostly local women... "While we demonstrated, we handed out a mimeographed explanation of our activities, which failed to satisfy Eempo, a University student magazine. A small portion of that statement reads: 'We young Americans today are demonstrating our firm support of the decision to resume atmospheric nuclear testing, and our opposition to the left-wing extremist hysteria that bleats we must not do anything that might displease the Soviet Union—when the thing most displeasing to the Soviet Union is the existence of a free United States... 'We do not discount the horrors of war or the trials of successfully prosecuting the cold war, but we know that man was not born an insensate lump of putty — that man's most important gift is not mere physical existence, but the freedom that his unique reason urges him to preserve.' "Said Tempo of YAF, 'They give the best appearance but satisfied liberalism wanting, weren't their goals a little low? Theirs was not a noble cause' — which gives you an idea of what it takes to impress Tempo magazine. "But most students can be reached, if only they can be made aware of the conservative case." "...On practically every major college and university campus in the United States, there are stirrings that reflect vigorous opposition to statism, and to the policy that treats with fantasies the implacable enemy who vows our destruction. It is a rebellion, whose young participants number in the tens of thousands, that portends a return to the mainstream of human progress. "Students have found self-young people do desperately desire and need a set of beliefs, which is why more and more are rejecting the tried cliches, the illogic, the self-doubt and lack of principle that is liberalism. "Young conservatives are alarmed at the erosion of personal freedoms in the United States. But we are more concerned, if that is possible, with the inherent incapability of liberalism to deal with world communism. "The paralysis of the American will is, we believe, best summed up by Senator Barry Goldwater who says, 'We have, with great sincerity, 'waged' peace, while the Communists wage war. We have sought settlements. while the Communists seek victories. We have tried to pacify the world. The Communists mean to own it...' "The steady losses to communism is another reason why more students are rejecting liberalism. "The task is to educate, to demonstrate the difference between freedom and the coercion of government machinery. "It can be done; it is being done, on American college campuses," Gollan concluded. ANTONI E. GOLLAN amazing progress at the University of Miami," said Gollan. The 23-year-old president of the U. M. Conservative Club,
