Police Grab Many Air Rifles

The recent shooting in the face of a Coral Gables youth with a powerful air rifle has led to a widespread crackdown on the use of these weapons by Gables police. Fifteen guns, two from one youth, have been seized by police along one street alone-Granada Boulevard. Granada had been the scene of a series of shooting incidents including the wounding in the mouth of 13-year-old Mike Arden, the shooting out of a minister's moving car window and breaking of many windows along the Coral Gables Waterway. Complaints began to mount and at least one person alleged that police were not taking enough action against the culprits. This led to the apprehension of several youths, including the one who had previously admitted the shooting of young Arden. While some youths were put on probation, others just had their illegal rifles confiscated. At least three of the two dozen rifles picked up by police were powerful pellet-type guns considered as dangerous as some .22 caliber weapons. The boy responsible for the wounding of young Arden had two pellet guns, a rifle and pistol, that had been given to him by his parents, police said. Last year, one youth did an estimated $5,000 damage to shop windows before being apprehended.

Woolworth's Expects to Be Ready in June

F. W. Woolworth Co., which leased store space vacated by its next door neighbor, Food Fair, should have the merchandise on the floors of its newly expanded store next June, a spokesman said. The expansion by Woolworth, at 152 Miracle Mile, will more than double its present space, the spokesman said. Woolworth now has a frontage of 95 feet. When it completes its move into the old Food Fair space, its Miracle Mile frontage will increase by 120 feet.
