Christmas Spirit Reigns at Variety

By DOROTHY COLLIN Woman's Editor Christmas is for children. But when a child is in the hospital, the holidays can be a lonely time. Variety Children's Hospital, with the help of service groups and private donations, tries to make sure that Christmas is not a sad occasion for its patients, but one of joy, presents, bright decorations, and the Christmas spirit. Every child seen in Variety's clinic or staying in the hospital receives at least one Christmas toy, according to Leslie Thomas, administrative assistant. These toys, and there are hundreds, are donated by various organizations ranging from Shriners to Cub Scouts, and by people who just want to help, he said. "We depend on the goodness of people to help us to help others," Thomas said. He told of one little girl who brought her piggy bank containing 36 cents to the hospital and asked the money be used to buy gifts for the children in the hospital. "It was wonderful to see a child who had learned to share like that," Thomas said. Many former patients return at Christmas to visit present day patients. Thomas said a man, who had been a polio case years ago and is now in the greeting card business, came back bringing a Santa Claus, balloons and cards with him. A local radio station threw a Twist party complete with a band, disc jockeys, and free records last week. Candystripers, young volunteers who work in the hospital, dressed as clowns and entertained the children at the party they had. A big day for the children was when the football players from the North and South All-Star teams visited the hospital loaded down with presents. Four children from Variety rode on the Shrine float and attended the North-South game in the Orange Bowl. Among those who went to the game was five-year-old Tommy. Doctors once feared BARBARA SIPPIO, HER LEGS IN CAST, STARES Tommy would never walk again, but he does now. His nurse described him as being a real "wiggle-worm" during the football game and enjoying every moment, especially when he interviewed on television and when busy eating hot-dogs. Tommy still can't bend his elbows, and has to be helped or financial status. Some of the children's lives were not easy before coming to the hospital so their Christmas there is perhaps the best they have known. One little girl's mother said the doll which was given to her child was the nicest gift she had ever gotten. On Christmas Eve Santa went around the hospital with presents for all the children. Thomas said the Christmas Eve Santa was the third one he had seen in the hospital this year. Last year, he said, there were eight Santas and they started passing out gifts in November. The wards and rooms of Variety are cluttered with the toys the children have received and many rooms have two and more trees. A peek in various rooms revealed a huge yellow bear, a fluffy lion, an elaborate doll house, games and dolls of all shapes and sizes. For Christmas dinner the children ate turkey with all the trimmings. to eat, but he is improving all the time. Variety accepts patients regardless of race, creed, color,
