Coral Way on the Way! Canal Is the First to Go

Modernizing of Coral Way from the Palmetto Expressway to Galloway Road (SW 87th Avenue) was to start this week with the elimination of the paralleling canal. Harris Paving Co., which was awarded the $332,100 contract was to start work yesterday (Wednesday), according to Eugene Beclamps, assistant highway engineer for Dade County. The project is scheduled to be completed in six months. Beclamps said he expected little interference with traffic during the early stages of construction, which involves moving the present canal northward and covering it up with a concrete slab or pipe. Tropical race track, which generates heavy traffic during the racing season, is not expected to cause any problem in the less than two weeks of racing left, he said. Beclamps was also optimistic that tearing up of the present two-lane pavement in preparation of the four-laning and dividing operation would not greatly handicap traffic during the next 180 days. Parelleling side roads will be utilized until the first two lanes are completed and then the completed section will be used, Beclamps said. The new road will have several plusses, he pointed out. Although the kids will lose a fishing spot of questionable valued, elimination of the canal will prevent more fatal auto accidents from drowning and the odor from stagnant water should also be curbed, he said.

Elementary School May Open Next Fall

Bids will be let Jan. 16 for the proposed Village Green Elementary School which will be constructed on a 9.6-acre site at 12265 SW 34th St. Frank Sloane, Dade County Director of Research and Information, said the building should cost approximately $400,000 and be ready for pupils next fall. He added the name Village Green, is not official, but is merely a tag for the planning and construction period. The 20-classroom building will include one large activity room, two half-size classrooms for special education, a library, cafetorium and usual administrative offices.

Seadade Law to Be Sifted

Metro's proposed anti-pollution ordinance will be aired at a public hearing set for 10 a.m. January 23 at Dade County Auditorium. The auditorium is located just west of the Flagler Street - 27th Avenue intersection. If you wish to speak, contact: W. F. Russell, clerk of the board, Room 1616, County Courthouse, Miami 32 Florida. Include a brief statement of your position. Requests must be received by Jan. 15. Aimed principally at controlling the proposed Seadade Oil Refinery east of Homestead on Biscayne Bay, the ordinance would be applicable to all pollution in Dade County. The ordinance would set up an appointive Pollution Control Board to regulate all industries. The Board would set up rules which would have to be approved by the Metro Commission. A pollution control officer, appointed by the County Manager, would be charged with the responsibility of policing the ordinance and empowered with the right to close down a violator industry. That right would be abridged, however, by the violator's right to go to Circuit Court and obtain an injunction blocking Metro from enforcement if the court decided no cause existed. The ordinance itself will set out tolerable limits of pollution. Hearings were held by the U.S. Corps of Engineers recently on Seadade's proposal to build a port to service the proposed refinery. The refinery has been the subject of heated controversy between its proponents, Seadade and the Committee on Clean Industry and opponents, the Safe Progress Association.
