JUNIOR ORANGE BOWL

CORAL GABLES TIMES Thursday, January 3, 1963 JUNIOR ORANGE BOWL

Everybody Loves (Gables) Parade

More than 25,000 enthusiasts lined the parade route Saturday afternoon for this year's delightful version of the Junior Orange Bowl Parade. Another 4,500 provided the manpower for the annual spectacle on the theme of "toy-land." Grownups took a back seat as the children danced, marched, twirled batons, played a variety of musical instruments and very important - helped pull the decorative floats. Debbie Lee Strout, of Ft. Pierce, this year's queen, beamed a hearty "hi" a thousand times as the parade wended its way down Ponce de Leon Boulevard, then Miracle Mile and Biltmore Way. Miami Springs Villas, with its "King Arthur's Court," float, was judged the best of the commercial floats which helped make up the 42 that made up the parade. Runner up was Coral Gables Federal's entry and University Federal Savings and Loan Association was second runner-up. The Hallandale Recreation Department from Broward County, won first prize in the recreation department float competition. And, as usual, the St. Camillus Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps, from Rockaway Beach, N.Y., was deemed the finest marching unit in the parade. Later Saturday night, 660 12 and 13-year-olds from Vero Beach to Key West gathered at the Coral Gables Youth Center for the ball. Queen Debbie was honored and the youngsters danced to the rhythms of a four-piece band.
