Gables Will Remember Name Of James Nichols

James Wood Nichols, immediate past president of the Coral Gables Apartment Owners Association and familiar figure in the fight to preserve high zoning standards in Coral Gables, died of cancer Saturday morning at his home. Mr. Nichols, who was 56, will be buried in the family plot in Fort Worth, Texas. Services were held Monday afternoon at the Coral Gables Chapel of Combs Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife, Adele Drenkle Nichols, 225 Salamanca; four sisters, a half brother and stepmother, all of Texas. Local Politicians. Mr. Nichols will be remembered by those active in local politics for his leading role in the fight to eliminate illegal room renting in Coral Gables ... a question still before the courts. A born fighter and leader, Mr. Nichols also led a long fight against high water rates in Coral Gables and also against development of Douglas Entrance along the lines approved by a former City Commission back in 1956. Until illness forced him to drop out of the battle lines last year, he could always be depended upon to occupy his usual front row seat at the regular meetings of the City Commission. He returned briefly after an operation, but the malignancy had spread and he was forced to drop out of active life. Mr. Nichols, the son of Dr. and Mrs. James R. Nichols, was born in Terrel, Texas, Sept. 13, 1904. His maternal grandfather was Major Fry, CSA, and his mother was Annie Davis Fry, the daughter of Col. Joshua Fry. Harvard Graduate. He received his BBA from the University of Texas in 1926 and MBA from Harvard in 1928. He belonged to Kappa Sigma Fraternity. In 1933, Mr. Nichols married Adele Drenkle, of Houston, Texas. During the early 1930s he was a representative for a wholesale bond corporation (Harris Trust & Savings Bank of Chicago) and was a fire and auto insurance agent before entering the Army in 1940. Although a National Guard officer, Mr. Nichols created a favorable impression upon his superiors as a member of the 36th Infantry Division during the North African and Scilian campaigns of 1942-44 and he was assigned to the Command Class at the Naval War College, Newport, R. I. He was one of 26 members of that class and only the second National Guard officer to be assigned to that school. Following World War II, Mr. Nichols was assigned to occupational duty in West Germany where he and Mrs. Nichols resided until shortly before his discharge as a lieutenant colonel in 1952. Attracted To Gables. In a search for a place to live, the Nichols were attracted to Coral Gables because of the high zoning restrictions. They acquired two apartments on Salamanca. Mr. Nichols subsequently became locked in a battle with illegal room renters. Recognizing that hardships existed, his main target were those who competed with legitimate business. And he often clashed with local political figures over deals that he did not believe to be on the "up and up." Once he was offered a high position with a financial institution to be, but he preferred to follow his chosen course. When he was not busy looking after the interests of the apartment owners, he was active with the Men's Garden Club and the Harvard Club. James Wood Nichols is gone, but his influence was felt and will continue to be felt for a long time in Coral Gables. MR. NICHOLS

Gables Seeks To Provide Alleys For Ponce

The Coral Gables City Commission moved last week to correct a long standing problem — alleys to service Ponce de Leon Blvd. establishments. Commissioners voted unanimously to follow a four-point recommendation of the Planning Advisory Board to: • Acquire rights of way for 20-foot alleys to be provided in business blocks where a dedication has not been made, except where large buildings obstruct a continuous alley and where these buildings provide their own ingress and egress. • Enter into negotiations with property owners and resort to condemnation if necessary. • Engage a special team or consulting firm to study the requirements for alley needs. • Agree that property owners who voluntarily dedicate rights of way without compensation would not be assessed costs of alley construction. The lack of alleys has made it difficult to service stores on Ponce. In many cases trash pick-ups and deliveries must be made through the front. How did the City get itself in this position? Seems like the early developers forgot to incorporate the alleys when they laid out that portion of the downtown area. The City Commission's move last week, sponsored by Commissioner Frank Kerdyk, is aimed at rectifying that long standing oversight.

Glamor Girl Is Contractor

Encouraged by her initial success in the building of 20 custom homes in the medium price range, a 23-year-old Glamor girl turned contractor has begun construction of four new model homes in Southwest Dade County. She is Gigi Reynolds Carrier, daughter of a prominent Florida builder, Samuel A. Carrier, and operator of the Sun Coral Development Co. Miss Carrier's new homes, at SW 148th St. and 87th Ave., will be joined by six other models to form a 10-model choice, ranging from $23,900 to $30,000 in price, in Sun Coral Estates. The young lady executive hopes to develop the entire area east of 87th Ave. on 184th St., because she believes the land and location to be ideal for homes on half-acre lots. Two of the new models will be ready by the end of February, and will be furnished by a well-known European designer and decorator. Nearly 100,000 soil samples are analyzed each year by laboratories in Florida.

Riverside Bank Top Bond Seller

Riverside Bank of Miami was the leading seller of U. S. Savings Bonds in Dade County during 1960, a U. S. Treasury Department report revealed this week. Tully F. Dunlap, of South Miami, president of Riverside, said the record is based on a ratio of sales to deposits, and was achieved through sale of $351,741 worth of Series E and H bonds. Riverside, Dunlap said, is one of the few banks maintaining a fulltime Bond Teller. She is Alma Jacobs, who has been handling the Bond Window at Riverside for 17 years.
