News Of The Library Books Always Make A Charming Present

By HARRIET DARE Catlog Librarian A thoughtful gift is a book "to charm, to strengthen and to teach." For those who appreciate good thoughtful writing A VOICE FROM THE ATTIC, by W. R. Davies ($4.75) is recommended. Mr. Davies comments in a delightful style about books and the joys of reading. For those who enjoy history, THE MEMOIRS OF GENERAL LORD ISMAY, ($6.75) is one of the most important books yet published about the planning and conduct of World War II. It is impartially written, with good character portrayal. Another outstanding historical work is THE RISE AND FALL OF THE THIRD REICH, by William L. Shirer ($10). This is a competent summing up of the history of Nazi Germany written objectively, but as "fast-paced" as a novel. A book a reader of history would like to own. VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC, by Samuel Eliot Morison ($6.50) covers the conquest of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the final phase in World War II in the Pacific. This is a distinguished work of literature. For our own country THE AMERICAN HERITAGE PICTURE HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR ($19.95) is a luxury item to cherish for its beauty and its narrative, by Bruce Catton. GONE ARE THE DAYS, by Harnett Kane ($12.50) paints the Old South in word and picture from the days of the Spanish adventurers to Appomattox. The emphasis is one the society and culture of "Dixie" with illustrations to bring those days to life. For art lovers, THE PASSIONATE SIGHTSEER ($10), by Bernhard Berenson has such superb photographs combined with a witty text by the art scholar, connoisseu and author. PORTRAITS OF GREATNESS, by Karsh ($17.50); perceptive psychological portraits of celebrated men and women exquisitely reproduced. For traveler, armchair or actual: A QUOTA OF SEAWEED, by Hamilton Basso (8.50) describes persons and places in Spain, Brazil, Honduras, Jamaica, Tahiti and Samoa. Vivid impressions convey atmosphere rather than facts. Many who enjoyed EXODUS, by Leon Uris, will enjoy EXODUS REVISITED ($5.95) in which the author revisits the scenes described in the novel. It is illustrated by a Greek photographer who pictures the young nation of Israel. ESQUIRE'S EUROPE IN STYLE, ed. by Richard Joseph ($4.95) is a different travel guide which gives travel-wise tips, but also adds the impressions of famous. writers to make a good at-home book either before or after the trip. AMERICA'S NATIONAL MONUMENTS AND HISTORIC SITES, by E. J. Long ($5) contains a wealth of information to use for browsing at home or on the scene. Well illustrated. For nostalgia, VANITY FAIR, edited by Cleveland Amory ($10) is a cavalcade of the 1920's and 1930's. Selections from "America's most memorable magazine" cover articles, short stories, poems and outstanding pictures of an era of glamor. For laughs, OUT ON A LIMERICK, by Bennet Cerf ($2.95) is fast and funny. It has more than 300 limericks and will give laughs through the year. For our native state: CREATURES OF THE SEA, by William B. Gray, director at the Miami Seaquarium, ($3.95). The adventures of the author in capturing and training the dangerous fish that now live in the aquarium, combines authentic data and exciting reading. Fascinating illustrations. FLORIDA, A WAY OF LIFE, by Mary Ellen (Mike) Smith ($3.95) is a persuasive invitation to visit or live in our state. Also, THE FLORIDA STORY, by Jack Kofoed ($3.95) is not to be missed. It is a good story told with a newspaperman's flair for color and distinctive descriptions. This is for both a native friend or a visitor. Before selecting a gift, all of these books may be read at the Coral Gables Public Library.

Before buying beef cuts offered for sale without official grade, ask the butcher what it is. "USDA Prime" is tops. Next is "USDA Choice." Then comes USDA good, standard, commercial, or utility. Lower grades become more palatable by long, slow cooking.

RECEIVING a silver cup for being the Distinguished Graduate of his class is 2nd Lieut. Wesley H. Carey, left, as Col. Donald W. Eisenhart, comdr. of Webb AFB, Texas, officiates at the exercises of Flight Training Class 61-E. Present among many relatives of the graduates were Lieut. Carey's wife and his mother, Mrs. Wesley G. Carey, 4123 LeJeune Rd. Lieut. Carey reports to Lake Air Force Base at Phoenix, Ariz., for the next six months training as a jet pilot, followed by a three weeks interlude of survival training at Reno Naval Air Base, Nevada. He was graduated from Coral Gables Senior High School and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

We're In Good Financial Shape

Coral Gables finances are in great shape, City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. reports in a six-month financial statement. The total budgeted income to Dec. 31, 1960, was 2.5 percent more than had been allocated, Robinson said. The ad valorem tax roll gain was $24,749. Sale of traffic control equipment to Metro brought $11,862 and building and zoning permits were $9735 above the same period in 1959. Utilities services taxes also picked up $19,492 ahead of the allocated amount. Losses were incurred in the operation of the Municipal Court, auto inspections and from golf. A deficit of $56,178 in the Working Capital Fund was expected to be made up by the end of the fiscal year.

Algeria Is Big

Turbulent Algeria is four times the size of Metropolitan France, the National Geographic Magazine says. Only three percent of Algeria's 920,000 square miles in North Africa grows crops; a mere sixth can support livestock. But new oil wells and iron deposits in the Sahara and recent finds of diamonds, nickel and copper in the Hoggar give promise of important economic growth.

8-Story Hotel Clears First Gables Hurdle

Coralair Corp. recently cleared the first hurdle in its proposal to construct an eight-story hotel at 1500 Madruga. Architect Gilbert M. Fein, who had made several unsuccessful attempts before the Coral Gables Board of Architects, finally got approval on the design at the Jan. 25 meeting of the board. The hotel plan must go before the Zoning Board and City Commission before it can become a reality.

Meter Cheats Are Getting Spot Checks

Spot checking of parking meter cheaters is now the policy in Coral Gables. The city recently dropped its pre-holiday season practice of stringent checking of all vehicles in the downtown area in favor of a new sharpshooting system of checking. City Commissioners had ordered a relaxation of the all-out drive on parking violators upon request of downtown merchants for the holidays. Earlier the city's meter checkers had been ordered to mark all tires and issue overtime parking tickets to all vehicles parked over the legal time limit, although additional money might have been put in meters. So, if you don't wish to get a ticket-don't park more than the legal limit or the meter checkers may ticket you even if you have put another coin in the meter.

Small eggs are sometimes a better buy than larger eggs when a price-weight comparison is made. According to the Florida Egg Commission, the nutritive value and cooking performance of small eggs are equal to those of large eggs of the same quality.
