City National Increases Capital 10,000 Shares

To increase protection for its customers, and due to the great addition to deposits the past year, the stockholders of City National Bank of Coral Gables recently voted to increase its capital by 10,000 shares, it was announced by Ira F. Willard, president of the bank since Feb. 1. Gain In Deposits The bank gained 26 percent in deposits, from $9,217,000 to $11,610,000, the greatest gain in 1960 of any bank on the Gold Coast in the $10,000,000-up class. In fact, only one bank in Florida in this class had a greater gain, according to a survey by the Florida Bankers Association. Capital was increased to $600,000 and surplus to $400,000 as added security for its 8100 depositors, Willard said. All directors were re-elected at the annual meeting of stockholders. Robert M. Altemus was re-named chairman of the board. President Willard announced to the stockholders that trust powers had been granted to the bank by the Federal Reserve System, and that a new trust department would be added to the bank's service some time in March. As an indication of the bank's growth, Allan T. Abess, Jr., was named executive vice president and cashier by the board. P. J. Valter was advanced to Vice President. Merle Graser was appointed assistant vice president. Joining the bank as Assistant to the President is R. L. Budde, 945 Hardee Road. He will head a new department for customer relations.

Solutions Sought For High Risers

The Coral Gables City Commission Tuesday tossed a large ball to City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. and told him to come up with some answers to the high rise building question. Meeting with representatives of the Planning Advisory Board, Zoning Bard and Board of Architects at a luncheon conference, the Commission soon concluded there were no ready solutions to the problem recently brought to a head by a proposal to build a 12-story apartment at 720 Biltmore Way. The group was split on the need for a professional planner to survey Coral Gables' needs for the future. Three proposals were discussed: Hiring a professional planner to do the whole job. Retaining a consultant who would work with various sity departments and boards. Going it alone with eity boards, departments and city personnel doing all the work. The first plan, championed by Commissioner Frank Kerdyk and architect Curtis E. Haley, failed to generate enough support. Going it alone is basically what the city has been trying to do, so this was virtually ruled out. The only alternative left was to follow the plan backed by Commissioner Robert Searle. Robinson has been instructed to draw a list of specifications and contact reputable planning firms to determine cost. The city manager told the Commission Tuesday that Charles Finkelstein, former chairman of the Urban Renewal Committee who advocated hiring of a professional planner in 1958, had made inquiries at the time and had determined that a planner would cost from $3000 up. 6 To 8 Months Robinson estimated that the job would take between six and eight months to complete. Commissioner Frank Kerdyk reported that South Miami recently spent $13,000 for a plan and that no objections were raised by the public to the recommendations. Kerdyk pointed out that the city's three boards have "worked like dogs" but have been unable to resolve the problem. Mayor John M. Montgomery, who labelled the recent 12-story apartment proposal a "trial balloon," cited the factor that any plan may have to be adjusted to opposition which may arise.

PROFILE of the week

"It came as quite a surprise winning that award", was the expression used by Robert J. Bradley, when asked about recently being honored as Outstanding Boss of the Year. Bradley, who lives at 6145 SW 102nd St., is commercial manager, Coral Gables district office, Florida Power and Light Company. The popular boss received his award at a recent banquet given by the Coral Gables Jaycees. Bradley, born in 1898 in Birmingham, Ala., was graduated from Auburn University with a degree in electrical engineering. Married in 1923, Bradley and his wife decided to come to Florida and settle in Miami. For the first few years, the automobile business occupied his time, and in 1928 Bradley joined Florida Power & Light as supervisor of merchandise sales. Bradley is also active in many community organizations, being a director of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Mahi Temple Shrine, the Coral Gables Rotary Club and Century Club. Bradley is also the father of two lovely daughters, both of whom are married. When not fulfilling his role as "Boss of the Year," Bradley can usually be found at home in his woodworking shop. His next great love is fishing, but lately there's been no "bite." As for the future, this energetic boss will just keep on trying to live up to the award he so richly deserved.
