Last Member Named To Board

William Kerdyk, brother of Commissioner Frank Kerdyk, was appointed to the recently created Coral Gables Recreational Advisory Board Monday. Kerdyk is the last member of the seven-man board to be named. The board, led by temporary chairman Bernard B. Weksler, is also made up of Mrs. Stanley Fosgate, William Charlton, Mrs. Dorothy Hoover, Larry Adams and Charles Rogers. As one of its first assignments, the City Commission Tuesday turned over to it the highly controversial problem of starting time handling at the City's municipally owned Granada and Biltmore Golf Courses.

Elks Club Fire Called Arson In South Miami

A fire whih South Miami police term arson caused some $25 in damage to South Miami Elks Club building, 6403 SW 78th St., Tuesday night, Feb. 14. According to the police, the fire, in the club's ladies' rest room, was believed to have started in a paper towel trash can. It spread to the wallpaper and one of the booths.

Seedbed Of Presidents

Washington's famous 150-man dining club and mock political party, the Alfalfa Club, is known as the seedbed of presidents. Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy were members long before their White House election. In the 1960 campaign all four major candidates for the presidency and vice presidency were veteran members of Alfalfa. The club's annual winter dinner in late January is considered the peak of the Capital's social and political season.

10,371 Gableites Registered To Vote

There are currently 10,371 Gableites registered to vote in the April 11 Municipal Election, City Clerk Loretta Sheeliy reported Tuesday to the City Commission. A total of 357 names have been purged from the voter registration list. Of these, 213 had died since the last election and the remainder had moved. The deadline for registering is March 11 at 9 p.m.

City Abandons Short Section Of Vera Cruz

A short section of Avenue Vera Cruz has been abandoned by the City of Coral Gables to create a unified tract scheduled to become part of a public park. Mrs. E. F. Jennings, owner of a large tract of land off Red Rd. just south of Old Cutler Rd., has received approval from the City Commission for the proposed plan. Mrs. Jennings, who appeared before the Commission last week with attorney Alice Wainright, said the property will be used in connection with activities at Montgomery Palmetum and Fairchild Tropical Gardens, both located about a mile north off Old Cutler Rd. The two women explained that facilities at the Palmetum and tropical gardens were becoming crowded and additional land is needed. A library and research facilities are planned, Mrs. Jennings told the Commission.

Civitan Clubs Unite To Aid March Of Dimes

Civitan Musicana, an eight act musical variety benefit for the March of Dimes, will be performed in the Dade County Auditorium on March 9, at 8:15 p.m. Dade County Civitan Clubs sponsoring the event are Miami, South Miami, Southwest Miami, Perrine, Homestead, Coral Gables, Miami Springs-Hialeah, Miami Beach, North Dade, Northside Miami, West Miami and Coconut Grove. Southwest Miami Club President Charles A. Vaughn, 1020 SW 10th Ave., has been appointed a director-coordinator. Overall operational advisor is Earl Scull, 3435 SW 73rd Ave., President of the South Miami club. Leonard C. Olson, 814 Coral Way, secretary of the Miami club, is in charge of tickets. The show will be directed by Paul LaPierre. Barnett M. Bree-skin, conductor of the Miami Beach Symphony Orchestra, will perform. Tickets may be obtained from any Civitan, the box office of the Dade County Auditorium, and the National Foundation of the March of Dimes, 646 SW 12th Ave.

Drops Derringer, Shoots Ankle

Fred August, 6221 SW 62nd Ter was shot in the ankle Friday night, Feb. 17, when a gun he was carrying dropped to the floor and went off. According to August, who was the only one on the scene, he was carrying a .38 caliber double-barreled Derringer in a holster across the front porch of his home. The weapon fell from the holster the floor and fired on impact. The bullet hit August in the right ankle. He was treated at South Miami Hospital.
