Library Notes Civil War Books Commemorate The Centennial
By HARRIET DARE Catalog Librarian As the nation begins the observance of the Civil War Centennial, there will be pageants and and many events to comemorate the sacrifices of those who gave "the last full measure of devotion". For those who cannot travel to see these ceremonies The Coral Gables Public Library offers a collection of over 100 books through which everyone may participate in the Centennial. Authors such as Freeman, Nevins, Catton, Hanna, have recreated the spirit of those times so that they come alive in our thoughts. Two recent additions to this collection are: THE AMERICAN HERITAGE PICTURE HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR. This volume portrays vividly in pictures and text the battles, the men, the leaders. The are colored and black-and-white photographs and paintings, some of which are by contemporary artists. For military enthusiasts numerous maps show landmarks and troop movements. THE CIVIL WAR AT SEA, by Virgil C. Jones, is an account of the first years of the war at sea. It is authentic documented history but easily read, and gives equal importance to the Confederate and Union sides. It begins with the secret preparations for war at sea and concludes with the engagement of the "Merrimack" and the "Monitor."

One hundred scholarships are awarded in this program, the amounts ranging from $200 to $2000. The winners of the 100 scholarships will be announced some time in late March or early April. The senior played No. 3 on the UM squad two years ago and was No. 2 man last season when he went undefeated in 17 matches. McCormick represented Miami in the 1960 NCAA championships. University Drive Next In Coral Gables' Plans
Improvement of University Dr. from LeJeune Rd. to Ponce de Leon Blvd. is expected to start shortly after bids are called sometime in mid-March. William Fagan, Coral Gables public works director, said Friday that the $35,000 project will involve re-alignment of the drive to eliminate a hazardous driving condition. Additional Funds The City Commission last week appropriated an additional $1568 to improve a short stretch of University Dr. on the west side of LeJeune in connection with the LeJeune Rd. widening project now underway and expected to be completed before the end of the year. An additional turning lane will be made possible by that move, Fagan said. The two-block long stretch from LeJeune to Ponce will be widened from approximately 30 feet to a uniform 46 feet. Replace Sidewalks Some sidewalks will have to be replaced, Fagan said, and new parkways will be construct ed, although no landscaping such as on Miracle Mile or Ponce is entailed. The road surface itself will be rebuilt and the present traffic control "button" island at the Ponce intersection will be re-aligned, made permanent and landscaped, Fagan said. Drainage facilities will also be relocated, he said.
Playground Wall Cost Doubles
...jew wall for the playground at Sunrise Harbour doubled in price from approximately $1000 to $2000, Coral Gables City Commissioners learned Tuesday. The wall, previously approved for construction by the Commission, now faces a dubious future because of the lack of funds. chitect Kenneth Treister, who presented a design plan for development of the park, had indicated earlier he could obtain a mason to erect the wall for approximately $1000, but the deal fell through. The problem was turned over to the newly created Recreational Advisory Board.
