Can They Talk Their Way Into Your Pocketbook?
Coral Gables High School's award-winning debate team hopes to go to Pittsburgh, Pa., next month to participate in the National Speech Tournament. Local civic and business leaders are being contacted to raise money to send the six-men debate team to the University of Pittsburgh for the tourney June 19-23. Approximately $900, or $150 each will be needed, according to Richard Schuster, member of the team who lives at 1209 Obispo Ave. Other members are Steve Magida, 2253 SW 34th Ave.; Betsey Warren, 310 Palmwood Lane; Alan Dinsmore, 8121 SW 63rd Ct.; Elliot Zack, 8450 SW 43rd Ter.; Ronald Jacobson, 5236 SW 64th Ave.; and Stan Friedberg, 5845 Twin Lakes Dr. Their coach is Mrs. Daphne Yvars. "We've had a very successful year," Schuster said. These successes included winning first place at Emory University; first place in the Miami Beach Forensic Festival and first place in the state tourney held April 15 at Sarasota. Magida and Schuster both placed first in that event and Betsey Warren was first in Girls' extemporaneous speaking. Jacobson was first in boys extemporaneous and Friedberg, first in humorous interpretation.
At Kendall County Home West Miami Club Backs Therapy Work
The West Miami Garden Club during the past year has sponsored a garden therapy program at the Kendall County Home for needy girls, ages 6 to 10. In charge of the program is Mrs. William Day, whose purpose for the plan is to encourage an appreciation of gardening and a love of beauty in the young girls. During the whole project the girls are given demonstrations and then encouraged to participate in the activities. Mrs. Day remarked "we feel that if we do not make good gardeners out of the girls, we are helping in a small way to bring some degree of happiness to a needy child, making us feel that our efforts are well compensated."

Ask yourself this question, "Is it too hard or am I too soft." There is nothing you say you can't do that probably someone has not done, no pain too great that someone else has not endured. Some people seem to have taken graduate courses in the art of counting all things hopeless. There was a man named Henry Ellsworth, onetime director of the Patent Office, who could have taught the course. Soon after he was elected to the office he said he thought it ought to be closed because there was nothing left to invent. He said this before the McCormick reaper, the Colt Revolver, or the Morse telegraph had been thought of. Yet in 1961 there are thousands like Henry who spend their lifetime saying, "It can't be done. I can't do it. It's too hard.
SM Lions Club Nominates Earl Peeples
Earl Peeples, 7220 SW 62nd Pl., has been nominated president of South Miami Lions Club. Nominations are tantamount to election. If elected, Peeples will replace Barney Davidson as club president. Elections will be held May 11. Installation will be in June. Other officers nominated are Fred Kirsch, first vice president; Hal Cromer, second vice president; Judge Tillman Pearson, third vice president; Barney Davidson, secretary, and Murrah Lamb, Tail Twister.
Sunset School Work To Begin
Carl Swanson, Miami contractor, has been awarded the $11,452 contract for a new library, a book room and a classroom for Sunset Elementary School, 5120 Sunset Dr. Swanson was the lowest of four bidders for the job which is expected to begin this week and be complete by the beginning of school in the fall.
