Palmetto Students Elect Pete Andrus President

By EUNICE TALL Correspondent After a week and a half of spirited campaigning, Pete Andrus, son of Dr. and Mrs. Don Andrus of 6040 SW 106th St., captured the presidency of the Palmetto High School Student Body, 1961-62. Pete, who has been active on Student Council for three years, is also an active member of the swimming team, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, (Math Honorary), and Key Club. Other officers elected to Student Body positions are Jerry Kartney, vice president; Sandra McQuinn, secretary; and Dick Smith, treasurer. These officers will be working during the summer months to plan various activities for next year. Class officers were also elected at this time. President of the Senior Class is Judi Cohen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Cohen, of 9570 Martinique Dr. Judi is active on Girl's Council, a member of National Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. Other Senior Class officers are Tom Spencer, vice president; Marlou Morton, secretary; and Jim Lipscomb, treasurer. Junior Class offices, president and secretary-treasurer, are held by Gretchen Schmidt and Eunice Tall, respectively. Gap Kovach will serve as president of the Sophomore Class and Dexter Lethinen will serve as secretary-treasurer. FACULTY FROLICS Tomorrow night (Friday) at 8 o'clock in the Palmetto auditorium, 7460 SW 118th St., the Senior Class of 1961 will present its third fund raising event of the year. Several teachers and various students will combine their talents and perform in "Faculty Frolics." This show will give the Palmetto students a chance to evaluate their teachers' talents and help promote better student-teacher relationships. The show is under the direction of Miss M. Trbovich, drama teacher. Admission is 75 cents and profits will help finance the building of a senior patio. CONCERT The Palmetto Band and Chorus presented their second annual Spring Concert last Friday night (April 28) in the school auditorium. The Panther Band, Dance Band, Mixed Chorus, and Girls' Chorus presented several selections. The profits gained went to the Band and Chorus funds for an air conditioner. John Kiraly was chosen as recipient of the Cutler Ridge Women's Club Scholarship. This first annual scholarship was awarded on the basis of a speech presentation and portfolio of art work submitted by John. The scholarship enables John to attend Dade County Junior College next year. If he can maintain a 2.5 average the first year the scholarship will be carried on automatically to the second year. John was awarded the scholarship April 28 at a banquet at the South Miami Cabana Club. As a graduation present to the Palmetto Freshmen, the Sophomore Class is presenting the Freshmen with a Graduation Dance Saturday night, May 6 in the school cafeteria. The dance, an annual event at Palmetto, will be the only graduation event offered to the Freshmen. It will be semi formal and it is only open to Sophomore and Freshmen couples.

LACKLAND AFB, Tex. — Airman Gregg W. Boutilier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. Boutilier of 1310 SW 76th Ave., Miami, Fla., has completed his initial course of Air Force basic military training here. Airman Boutilier is a graduate of Southwest Miami High School.
