Buzzes From Bowling
By LEE McNEELY Correspondent Monday night of last week in the Dixiecrats mixed league, George Waterhouse rolled a 201 for a 551 set, Jim Turner 223 for a 542. Trudy Knudsen, who is more often seen serving food and drink to the bowlers than bowling with them, recently had her first 200 game. Let me tell you, none of us will forget it. There's nothing like a 200 game to get you quicker service. Joe Massimo had a 579 set. Fern Wayne, bowling for Kendall Gulf, rolled a 651 handicap set. Fern averages 131. Roy Yearby had a 235 for a 560 set. Roy is bowling for Sheehan Buick. In the Metro Mixed League, Secretary Frank Freeman bowled a 552 set. Chick Spear rolled a 201 for a 575 set. On Friday night, in the Coconut Grovers League, the bowlers were really knocking down the maples. K. Mehringer rolled a 229 for a 550 set, H. C. King a 203, Tom Doody a 236 for a 616 set, Frank Dawson, 203, Frank Freeman 201, and to top it all off, Howard Norton rolled a 259 for a 700 hdcp. set. In the Bowl-O-Mat C.T.A. League, Andy Novak rolled a 210 for a 556 set, Winston Clarke a 223 for a 595 set, Hal Knott a 234 for a 532 set. Roger Wyatt rolled a 216 for a 599 set. On the disdaff side, Joyce Neff rolled her first 200 game, a 204. Marylin Gaschler is still looking for her first 200. Got pretty close to it, 193. In the South Dade Ladies All Stars, the final night of bowling proved to be pretty exciting. Esther Zissen, bowling for Leonards La Pena, blasted out a 242 for a 621 set. Pauline Stickler, bowling for the first place Anita Reynolds Team, rolled a 202, 210 for a 583 set, Edie Jo Russo 233 for a 540 set. Marcella "Squeeze" Otstot rolled a 210, Sue Hirsh has changed from her "lousy back up ball" to a mean looking hook. In the South Miami Elks No. 1, Jim Upson rolled a 208 for a 563 set,Roy Werntz a 241 for a 577 set, Bob Leonard a 202 and Claudia Lee a 541 set. In the Dixie Men's Hdcp. League, Joe Massimino had a 207 for a 601 set, Bob Wallace a 212 for a 568 set. They bowl for the Lobster House. Paul Bronson rolled a 207 for a 543 set. In the South Dade Men's All Stars League, Joe Woodruff rolled a 632, Joe Popp 602, Joe Piga 201, 212, 199 for a 612 set. Others were Nelson Barlow 226, Joe Massimino 225, Frank Kapushy 220, B. T. Rucks 200, Paul Bronson 200, Espinosa 236, Nelson Barlow 238. Bowlers are now being signed from averages and up to form the Heart Fund Association League. There will be a meeting of these bowlers as soon as those who are at the Nationals in Detroit return to Miami. The tentative date for this meeting will be May 7, 1961. The added prize of $1,000 has already been obtained and has been deposited in the name of the Heart Fund Association League. Watch this paper for further announcements.
Opens Next Week | Get Ready for Mirth In Methodist Minstrel
The 9th Annual Wesley Minstrel & Variety Show will be presented for three nights next week, May 11, 12 and 13 at the Coconut Grove Playhouse. Dr. Lewis N. Head will be interlocutor. Sponsored by the Wesley Fellowship Class of Coral Gables' First Methodist Church, the show will donate all proceeds to medical missions. Circulars for the show describe it this way: "Nine years of loving labor have gone into making this year's Wesley Minstrel & Variety Show the best yet, and a must on your entertainment list. "A group of doctors, attorneys, judges, merchants, tradesmen, executives, housewives and career girls literally knock themselves out to make you forget your troubles. "No veneer of sophistication is armor against is basic appeal." Reserved seat donations are $1, $2 and $3. Next week's Times will carry fuller details on the cast and program.
SM Music Club Slates Installation for Today
The South Miami Music Club will install Mrs. S. G. Riggs Jr. as its president and Mrs. Walter Dierick as corresponding secretary for 1961-62 at its May breakfast at the Riviera Country Club today (Thursday). Dr. Bertha Foster, founder of the Musician's Club of American will be mistress of ceremonies. The invocation will be given by Mrs. Clifton J. Muir, first vice president of the National Federation of Music Clubs. The installing officer is Mrs. Byron Sperow, immediate past-president of the Florida Federation of Music Clubs. The program will feature the club chorus under the direction of Mrs. Carlyle F. Brand, club president, Ina Porias, and Douglas Kerley, the club's scholarship student. Background music will be furnished by the Singing Strings Trio.
Mrs. Wulkan Is President
Mrs. Lawrence Wulkan is president of Temple Zion Sisterhood and will be installed in ceremonies Saturday. Other officers are Mrs. Sanford Gordon, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Abe Isgar, recording secretary; outgoing president is Mrs. Seymour Samuels. The installation will take place at the temple at 6 p.m.
