HELLO CANADA

— The Kiwanis Club of South Miami observed Canada-U. S. Goodwill Week recently with a telephone meeting between South Miami and Peterborough, Ontario. Left to right in the picture are President Ed Grout; Arthur A. Pendleton who arranged the program; Frank Smitherman, British consul for Florida who is talking; and John R. Barnes, Kiwanis International committeeman.

Open House Set at SM Hospital

South Miami Hospital will observe National Hospital Week with an open house Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m. "This will be the first of an annual open house which the hospital will hold," says Ralph H. Bearden Jr., chairman of board of governors. "Each year at this time we will open the hospital to the public and conduct guided tours through the building explaining and demonstrating facilities and services offered." The Hospital women's auxiliary will serve as hostesses. Mrs. Henry Bryant, president, is general chairman and Mayor Paul Tevis will serve as honorary chairman. Under supervision of Mrs. L. M. Hudnall, director of nurses, hospital tours will be conducted in small groups so as not to disturb the patients.

Flagami PTA Meets Tuesday

The monthly meeting of the Flagami Elementary School PTA will be held next Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the school. Mrs. William Brown will preside at the installation of the new PTA officers. President is Mrs. Charles Hitt, 1700 SW 73rd Court Rd., re-elected, and corresponding secretary is Mrs. C. A. Campbell Jr., 7330 SW 15th St.

SW Student Knight Art Winner

By LAURA HENRY Correspondent Southwest's Mike Gelfo, captured the Art Silver Knight Award Thursday night at the Dade County Auditorium. Mike is an accomplished muralist, interior decorator, and designer of several homes. He also participates in track and field and is an A student at Southwest. Southwest also had four runners-up. They included James Gray in mathematics; Harriet Charnin in social science; Don Barber in citizenship; and Wayne Wever in athletics. Three Southwest students won awards in the speech contest sponsored by the Coconut Grove Exchange Club, April 10. Robert Wagner received $50 for first place; Gene O'Dell, second, $30; and Ronnie Rosenstone, third, $20. Senior James Gray, won a math contest sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America and the Society of Actuaries for the second straight year. Second place in the school winner was Tom Trotter, another senior, and third place was taken by junior Geoffrey Manley. Prosperity is not without many fears and distastes; and adversity is not without comfort and hopes.—Francis Bacon.
