with Ed Knight The measure of choosing well is whether a man likes and finds good in what he has chosen-LAMB. CHOICE-I ALWAYS have been fascinated in that word. Webster defines it this way: the act of choosing or making a selection; the power of having an option; that which is excellent, the best part; discrimination; care in selecting an alternative. I WONDER IF we realize how many choices we make each day and why we make these choices. I marvel at the ease with which we make these choices and the reasons we make one choice over another. The more choices we make, the easier other choices become. FROM THE MOMENT we awaken in the morning until we finally slip off to sleep at night we are making choices. Every choice we make affects not only ourselves but our loved ones, our fellow workers and even our neighbors. WHEN I WAKE UP in the morning I must decide what pair of shoes to wear, what shirt I must grab from the dresser, what tie I should slip around my neck and what suit I must wear throughout the day. SOMETIMES MY CHOICES depend upon others' choices. And so it goes. When I leave for work, I make a choice of which of two or three routes to use. On some days I take one route. On other days, I take a different one. And it's the same with you, too. WHENEVER I PULL a cigaret from my pocket, I am making a choice. Whenever I buy a pack of cigarets I'm making a choice. It's part discrimination, part option. But the fascinating aspect about making choices is why we make them. WHENEVER WE VISIT the supermarket we have umpteen choices to make. The housewife, with her brood to cater to in the purchase of food, is a great one at making choices. Sometimes it's a problem to make the right choices. But they're made. SOME CHOICES are far more important than others. But education, experience and sound advice aid us greatly is making these. For many of us it's only once in a lifetime that we have an opportunity to make a choice in purchasing a home. IN THE PURCHASE of a car, the choice can be a costly one. Why do we buy one car over another? A car now-a days is used primarily for transportation. Once in a while we take a vacation. It's seldom that we choose a car for pleasure driving. Yet, our choices in cars are most often made with a view toward the vacation and the pleasuring driving. IT IS OFTEN, too, how many choices are already made for us when we come into this world. We have no choice in even naming ourselves. (Women have one and sometimes many choices in this respect.) Our religion is many times predetermined for us and our race is decided by the hand of fate. BUT YET, ONE of the first signs of life in the newborn baby is the making of a choice. The baby grows on choices. If a food tastes bitter the first time it is eaten, the choice is not to eat it another time. IF THE BABY BECOMES naughty, he gets spanked. He won't choose to become naughty in the same respect again. Other choices are made. He chooses to play with one companion over another. But none of his friends are bad because his parents have chosen to live among good people. HIS SCHOOL, TOO, is sometimes a matter of choice. Will it be a religious or a public school? Will it be a military or a reform school? Choices, Choices, Choices. His college, his subjects and his career are a matter of choice. His girl friends are his own choosing, so is his wife. ONE OF THE MOST pertinent aspects in choice-making is the constant striving for excellence. Goodness is pleasure. And good choice-making brings pleasure. Bad choice-making brings misery. There is no quality higher than goodness. This is the reason we abhor being tricked into making a bad choice. IF WE BUY a used car on the advice of a high-pressure salesman, we trust his choices of goodness over badness. If the car is not a good one, we have made a bad choice. And misery follows. We may not only distrust that salesman but-all other used car salesmen. Choose always the way that seems the best, however rough it may be; custom will soon render it easy and agreeable.-Pythagoras.
SM Methodists Reach Nearly Half of Fund Goal
Some 189 Methodists gathered last weekend at a Day of Destiny banquet at First Methodist Church of Coral Gables and subscribed $110,000 toward the current building fund goal of $250,000 for a new sanctuary. "The wonderful crowd subscribed 44% of the campaign goal with enthusiastic cheerfulness. I am confident that the remaining amount will soon be subscribed by those who were unable to attend last night," said Warren Smyth, general chairman. It is anticipated that actual building operations will begin within a year following the successful conclusion of the campaign, Building Committee Chairman Ed Harris said.
Newsie Robbed of $45 In Sunset Road Holdup
A newspaper distributor was robbed of $45 in a holdup early the morning of April 27 at 1575 Sunset Road. Eugene Tynes, of Hollywood, told Coral Gables police that the robbery occurred shortly before 7 p.m. as he was unloading newspapers from a truck owned by Dade County News Dealers Supply Co. The thief entered the truck, pulled out a nickle-platted hand gun and told Tynes: "Give me your money if you want to live." Tynes said he handed over the money and the bandit took off. According to Officer Walter Stathers, Tynes described the robber as about 50 years old and slightly built.
