WEST of the City Limits with Ron Levitt
There is a group of men in Our Town who, for nearly three years, without the fanfare of publicity, have been doing a lifesaving job. Back in 1958 a group of 10 men from the suburban areas got together and formed the Tamiami Volunteer Rescue Team. The group banded together originally to aid the Highway Patrol in canal accidents. Today the group, now numbering nearly 50 men, do everything from rescue work in canal accidents, accidents in the home, drownings, to automobile mishaps. The volunteers originally covered the Tamiami canal area in Southwest Dade. Last year, it formed a second unit in North Dade and now is getting together its third unit in the Westwood Lake area in Southwest Miami. Up until last year the men bought all their own rescue equipment including first aid kits, oxygen, resuscitators and a two-way radio system which allowed them to be constantly tuned to the Florida Highway Patrol frequency so that they could hear all accident calls the minute received. Last year, they started publishing a safety manual, the profits from which were utilized to buy more rescue equipment. None of the men receive any pay for their work — it is strictly on a volunteer basis. Yet despite the difficulty in getting men to volunteer for such time consuming and often dangerous work, the group has set their standards high — all volunteers must go through the rigid and complete Standard and Advanced Red Cross courses. Although the men are busy on their jobs throughout the day, they will leave their work on a minutes notice when a distress call comes in either on their radios or on their emergency telephone numbers. In the past months, for example, members of the rescue team were first on the scene in a number of mishaps. They hurried to a home where a child had an object lodged in its throat; they rushed to a scene where a resident had been bitten by a snake; six of their men worked for nine hours to try to revive the driver of a car in a canal mishap; they rushed to the scene of a motorcycle-truck collision; they were at the scene of another canal mishap four minutes after the car had gone into the water and saved the life of the driver. The work of the Tamiami Volunteers has been a great assist to the Highway Patrol which must cover such a wide area in Our Town and usually the Highway Patrol will notify the volunteers immediately in the case of distress. Some of .these Southwesterns active in the volunteers are Milton Wood, their chief; Jerry Pucci, assistant chief; Jack Knight (Chief of Police, Sweetwater); noted diver Phil Amero; Hank White, Eddie Burke, Everett Klusner, Orlando Vitale, Bill Cantrell, David Hiyishi and Barry Gardner. These are just a few of the men — and they all do a magnificent job for our community without any thought of praise or renumeration. Today the volunteers are in the process of training more men to join their life-saving force and are also tackling the job of putting out a second safety manual in order to raise money bo buy more oxygen and recussitators for their work. As one of the members said, if their unit was even more fully equipped, "we might be able to save more lives." He told of a recent accident where two persons in a car had gone into a canal and both needed oxygen at once. However, they only had one resuscitator which they purchased themselves. "That's why we need more equipment," he said. He made his point.

Your Water Rate's Involved in This
(Continued from page 1) appointed by the city to defend South Miami in the suit, has until Friday to file an answer to Kelly's report. Following this, a date will be set for a Circuit Court Hearing on the master's recommendation. It is not known which Circuit Court judge will hear final appeals in the suit. If the Circuit Court rules against South Miami in the suit, Long said he will recommend to South Miami Council that the verdict be appealed to the next highest court. Long said in every water company suit in Florida history the court has ruled that the utility's assets and profits on a system-wide basis took precedent over those assets and profits in a portion of that system. If the city does lose the suit, cost of the suit to the city will be about $6,500.
