Including Director's Granville Gallery Opens 1-Man Shows
GLORIA CONNAN'S first one-man show in the United States is exhibited at the Granville Gallery along with a one-man by Jack Amoroso. Most of Miss Connan's oils are heads of little girls and of Seminole Indians. The heads are loosely representational and lack close-up or long-range good composition. For the most part, colors are tube fed and uninteresting. I had hoped to see from Miss Connan's extensive travel either some foreign influence or more European subject matter. Her little French girls have charm and feeling and show a true love of subject. "Madame," hung in the rear as an afterthought, lacks technical excellence but shows a free style and unharnessed approach to the canvas. Jack Amoroso, newly appointed director of the gallery, is a "welcome back" addition to the local scene. Back from the Bahamas, he seems more dedicated to his work. He adds a friendly, knowledgeable and experienced touch to the directorship. His one-man this month leaves both something to be desired and something to be admired. His canine paintings are few and for the most part uninspired. Space seems taken up rather than filled with his usual bright moving forms. "The Skin Diver" shows a fine departure from the normal forceful play of lines. It succeeds in bringing the viewer's eye from the top of the water looking down. Amoroso shows he can subdue color to achieve harmony and complete his statement. If you have room in home or office and you like outdoor subjects, take a look at this . . . you might want to buy it. —R.S.H. A Review
Art Times
By Robert S. Hurwitz TELEVISION AND ARTISTS Thursday night on Channel 2 - Lita Quejado hosts an, if you'll excuse the expression, "educational" program on art. The program is dedicated to educating the average person by letting the artists themselves define and discuss the objective and subjective meaning of art. The idea is good; Miss Quejado is charming; but the show in most cases, when dealing with the understanding of art, leaves the average viewer confused and scared. Understanding modern art is simple, yes, really very simple. Yet on this show the artists are allowed to ruin the chance that someone might just realize that extreme emotional pleasure can be gained by simply knowing that a work is really an "expressive form" rendered visually. This show can put art in this area years ahead . . . if the artists absolutely are required to stick to the subject and Miss Quejado makes sure they do. For sheer delight and enjoy-ment every home should have original paintings and art objects of some kind. Yet, in Florida, the percentage of homes with anything but flower prints and very bad "furniture store art" is evident. Why not original art? Let's explore. 1. Prices are too high. This could be a good excuse. Not many people want to buy art at inflated prices by Inflated artists. In many cases, prices are just plain out-of-line. This would be the artists' fault. 2. Some patrons of the art or average shoppers have some lousy notion that because they bought a dress wholesale they can buy anything at discount prices including good original paintings or art objects. If you fall into the category of wanting or needing art and use the "they won't bargain attitude," this would be your fault. 3. If, however, you really desire, good, serious works and have made the effort to find them by visiting galleries and have been made to feel uncomfortable, dumb, or uninvited, this corner would like to know about it. This column will, in every possible instance, encourage the buying of art. On the oth-er hand, this column will not only review shows but assess the prices asked.
