From the Garden Notes and Quotes

By Madelene Hawkins Garden Club presidents make their entrance during the sentimental months of May and June. Some of the reelected presidents who have said, "I Do," and are deep in plans for the coming year are Mrs. Robert R. Friis of Biltmore Heights and Mrs. Charles Sharp of Shenandoah Garden Club. Mrs. Minna Ames, Sarolla Avenue, will head South Florida, one of the larger groups in the area, and Mrs. R. W. Kentworth will plan the future Southwest, one of the more newly organized. Whenever we see Mrs. Archie Comer her station wagon is just filled with buckets and pails of beautiful flowers and foliage. A teacher at Vineland school in addition to being an accomplished flower arranger and rosarian, her pupils are indeed fortunate. A trip to Europe is on her agenda. Mrs. Marion Wipprecht, a past president of Coral Gables Garden club, will be digging in the textbooks this summer instead of in her patio for a master's degree from the University of Miami. Mrs. Edwin T. Woodward will again be program chairman for 300 plus CG members. It will certainly be City Beautiful day when the District XII Flower Show Judges meet on May 29th. Mrs. Frank Hewlett, Mrs. Charles McWethy, Mrs. Robert Adams and Mrs. Henry Freeman will bring arrangements to be point scored by Mrs. Harry Crim. Mrs. J. Forest Diehl, Sarto Avenue is coordinating the refreshments with other Gables judges. June 1, Mrs. C. Smyth will be installed as president of Hammock Garden club. Mrs. Herbert May will be hostess for this June luncheon. Using more than one language in our daily lives is fast becoming an established fact; you already know a bit of color and sign language. The color red for danger or V for Victory. Spanish, French in 10 easy lessons but understanding the language of flowers calls for a keener and softer approach. Compiled by the Society of American Florists here are a few phrases to use during the sentimental months of May and June. Blue Violets... I'll be true, always. Pink Carnation... I'll never forget you. Chrysanthemum... You're a wonderful friend. Gardenia... You're lovely. Orchid... Beautiful lady. Red rose... I love you. Sweet peas... Thank you for a lovely time. White rose... you're heavenly. Yellow tulip... There's sunshine in your smile.

God's Power

By NEIL WYRICK Palmetto Presbyterian Pastor Not what life has done to you but what you are doing for life; this is the balance line between success and failure, between happiness or misery. If you spend every moment moaning it is not likely you will have either much time or energy for much doing. To cry a bucketful of tears or pray a bucketful of prayers, to curse a thousand curses and kick the ground or say one prayer of thanksgiving for life and till the soil. What a difference! It is the difference between a child of God and the childish. It is the difference between a life lived in victory or mushed out in defeat. The fool gives up on life; the wise man never gives up. The fool says tomorrow is hopeless because of today. The wise man says tomorrow can be better if I meet it as a wiser, better, more hopeful child of God. If you dare to believe these thoughts you will have dared yourself into a better life.
