Rich in Historical Lore, Panama Has Abundance of Holiday Attractions.

"The Land Divided, The World United. Thus the Panama Canal is often described. Sometimes it is called "a dream of centuries finally come true." Since early in the sixteenth century, the construction of the Panama Canal, dividing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, was the subject of speculation and study, and several plans were suggested recommending routes in various countries. The United States Government became interested in the Canal with the advent of the California Gold Rush, (1850). However it was not until 1903, after unsuccessful attempts by the French to construct the Canal, that this country acquired from the government of Panama the rights to build one across the isthmus. After 10 years of labor, following a preliminary period devoted to sanitation, the Canal was completed in August, 1914. The cost of construction was $366,000,000. During 1953-54 terms of the General Treaty, which deals with the Panama Canal, were revised by representatives of Panama and the United States. The new treaty covers matters of concern to both countries arising from the construction, operation, administration, maintenance and protection of the Canal. PANAMA'S ECONOMY The strategic geographic position of the Republic of Panama, as a crossroads between the two oceans and two continents has, to a large degree predestined its economic activities, with major emphasis on commerce. Until recent years, only secondary consideration was given to agriculture, industry and tourism. Recently however, the government of Panama has taken steps in building their tourist trade by inviting leading travel representatives to their country. Mrs. Marian D. Keller, of Travel Inc. has recently returned from a convention in Panama. She said, "There are many points of interest in Panama. I enjoyed touring the country, seeing the Tabogo Islands... The Panama Canal and the accommodations at the El Panama Hilton Hotel were excellent." The convention had representatives of travel agency firms and individuals from vertually every significant country in the free world. "By exchanging ideas with these men, I added my knowledge of the travel industry. This enables Travel Inc. to better serve their customers with advice in places to see, finer accommodations, and better means of transportation." THE PEOPLE "In Panama, tourists can actually meet the people - not just sales girls and tour guides - but families on farms, "Mrs. Keller said. "The Panamanians with their characteristic penchant for cordiality, believe that visiting a strange land is more than sightseeing and shopping. They contend that tourist should not only see Panama, but feel it! "Travelers have a wide choice of meeting people. Also there are selections of tours available, which permit curious tourists to inspect anything from the Canal to a rice plantation." CULTURE The cosmopolitan outlook of the Panamanians is an inheritance from colonial days, strengthened by their strategic position in the modern world. Since the birth of the Republic, the government has been prompt to take advantage of cultural and scientific progress abroad, and its policy has been characterized by two consistent specialists in various fields to organize needed services, and second, to send promising Panamanian students abroad every year on scholarships in order that they may acquire knowledge and skills that will benefit their homeland on their return. INTER-AMERICAN UNIVERSITY When the ministers of education from the American nations met at a conference, October 1943, they supported the project for an inter-American university. The Panamanian government decided to undertake the project, utilizing the National University of Panama as a nucleus and adding other specialized scientific institutes as circumstances permitted. Support from the other American nations was not forthcoming and a new constitution granting legal and financial autonomy was adopted early in 1946. The same year the official name "University of Panama" was given to the institution and new university statutes were approved. THE LAND DIVIDED. THE WORLD UNITED. Thus the Panama Canal is often described. Sometimes it is called "a dream of centuries finally come true." Mrs. Marian D. Keller of Travel Inc.

Wonder Working Product

Are you like most of South Florida residents, bothered with building cracks throughout the interior and exterior of your home? You can rid yourself of this problem with Renuart's Tuff Kote. Best of all you can do it yourself, easily and quickly. Tuff Kote is a heavy-bodied pigmented material that produces a waterproof bridge across joints and cracks that moves with expansion and contraction. Movement of a crack by heat and cold can continue with a break in Tuff Kote. Both paint and building materials are protected. A balanced combination of Bodied Linseed, Tung and Soya Marine Oils make up over 80% of the Tuff Kote formula. Other products like tar and asphalt get brittle in cold weather when flexibility is needed. Tar cannot be hidden by paint. Chaulk does not have the tensile or adhesion strength needed in moving cracks and joints. Mortar gets hard and brittle with little adhesion to smooth surfaces and movement of any sort causes it to crack. Tuff Kote has more than 102 uses. It can be used to patch shrinkage around doors, sinks and shower cracks, etc. Remember, you can purchase Tuff-Kote at any 4 Renuart Stores, each one conveniently located to serve you. All stores are comfortably air-conditioned and feature self service and ample free parking.
