South Miami Roundup with Ed Knight

SCHOOL PLANS - It's not going to be built in the near future but a new high school on the northern end of Galloway Road may be constructed on a track about three blocks from Tamiami Trail on the west side of 87th Ave. * * * THERE ARE ALREADY three junior highs to feed students to the Tamiami Senior High - Rockway, West Miami and Riviera and there may be more before the influx of students slows down. Southwest Senior High is on the southern end of Galloway. But that's a long way for students from the northern end of Galloway to be going. * * * NOMINATIONS for the bumpiest streets in the southwest: Miller Road from Red to Galloway Road, Ludlam Road, Ludlam Road from Bird to Miller Road, North Kendall Dr. from South Dixie west and Galloway Road from North Kendall Dr., south to 112th St. Any other nominations? Know how Red and Blue Roads got their names? The answer: On the early maps of the Southwest, Red (57th Ave.) and Blue (48th St.) roads were designated and marked in Red and Blue colors. When later maps were made, these streets were known as Red and Blue Roads. This info comes from a pioneer South Miamian who remembers horsedrawn carts moving along Red Road. * * * WHEN IS the county going to do something about cleaning up the fresh water fishing area beyond the dike on Tamiami Trail? It's a mess now and it's getting worse. The stench is terrific. Smelly dead fish are lying about. So are beer cans and whiskey and beer bottles. All that is needed is a weekly cleanup by prisoners. Or better, still, are trash baskets at intervals. This wnn't take care of the dead fish, but it may help in alleviating some of the debris. * * * PIZZA AND CHINESE food are becoming big business in the southwest. I've counted no less than 15 easily reached pizza spots in the area and that's not counting the drive-in movies where you can munch on pizza and take in a movie at the same time. Chinese food? Chow Mein is where you find it brother-but it's there. * * * EVER NOTICE the large number of service stations going in the southwest? It's ridiculous. There aren't enough cars for all the gas sations-but still they're opening. There are two off-brand service stations opposite each other on Bird Road. They specialize in gas prices two cents below the name-brands and they have a private gas war each week. * * * FAMILIAR SIGHTS about the southwest-kiddies in their bathrobes and pajamas yawning at the drive-in movies ... little leaguers riding their bikes after school and in the evenings down to the baseball fields ... too bad there aren't sidewalks on Bird, Coral Way and Ludlam ... short haircuts for the boys ... shorter shorts for the lassies ... more FOR SALE signs in front of homes than ever before ... and of course the summer uniform for police officers. * * * WHAT TO DO with the kiddies in the summer time? Well, here's one fellow's way of harnessing all that energy and putting it to use: Wait for a few weeks after school is out. They'll have the loafing out of their systems by this time. Then begin rounding every boy and girl for miles around. THEIR PARENTS WILL never miss them. Give each one a shovel and tell it to start digging. Have each child dig for an hour a day. By the time school is ready to begin again the community will have a hole big enough for a giant swimming pool. EVERY CHILD that helped dig for the pool can swim in it at no expense thereafter. Besides, it would give the youngsters a sense of accomplishment. Well, it wasn't my idea. But then, there is a lot of energy being wasted in the summer.

Registration Opens For YMCA's Camp At Lake Placid

Registration is being taken for the YMCA's summer boy's camp along the shores of Lake Placid in central Florida. The camp program runs from June 17 to August 26 and consists of five two-week periods. The dormitories are cabins, each housing 10 boys, plus counselors. The dining room accommodates 100 boys, the camp's capacity. The camp will be directed by John C. "Jack" Barber. He will be assisted by Robert Moxley, a Florida State University graduate with seven years camping experience. A. E. "Sonny" Overton of Florida Southern University and a former YMCA swimming instructor will be in charge of the waterfront.
