Yearbook Dedicated to Winston Jones Southwest High Presents Honors
By OUR CORRESPONDENT Several unusual events highlighted the customary presentation of cups and medals at the fourth annual awards assembly at Southwest Miami High School May 11. Mrs. Adelaide McKim, sponsor of the National Honor Society, conducted the ceremony. Winston Jones, activities director, received a standing ovation when it was announced that the 1961 yearbook, the Aquila, was dedicated to him for his constant interest in student affairs. Other faculty candidates honored also were Mrs. Mabel Staats, Mrs. Gretchen Hankins, Mr. Dexter Magers, Miss Cecile Roussell, Mrs. Lou McLean, Mr. Joseph Ward and Mrs. McKim. Second surprise was the chalk portraits presented to Mrs. Helen Lephew, dean of girls, and Alfred Pope, dean of boys, for their outstanding contributions to the school. The likenesses were drawn by Penny Wine. FREEDOM WINS A Freedoms Shrine, consisting of a case for displaying copies of famous historical documents, was given to the school by Fletcher Swezey, on behalf of the National Honor Society. Honor Society awards were: Art Honor society, Al Lediard, Michael Gelfo, Connie Shipski; Modern Music Masters, Camilla MacDonald, Stanley Sigismund, William Griffith; Quill and Scroll, Marie Moore; Thespians, Clyde McLean. James Gray received the National Honor Society scholarship. He was one of 400 over the country chosen out of 65,000. ALL WINNERS General award winners were: United Nations Contest, Linda Dunn, Thomas Allen; Girl's State, Patsye Doyle, Sally Kitchin; Eleventh Grade English Award, Karen Bobkoff; Sportsmanship, Janet Reagin; Science Fair winners, Patricia Nast, Richard Marks; Youth Leadership, Joyce Killian, Allen Kynes. Others were Citizenship, Mary Lou Hoopes; Patriotic Editorial, Marsha Shackelford; Outstanding Athletic Ability, Delores Laws; Outstanding Gymnast, Andrew Edison; Outstanding Junior Boy, William Heins; Highest Academic Achievement, Bea Weaver, James Gray. Outstanding Leadership, Don Barber; Devotional Leadership, Thomas Boone; Leadership, Service and Athletic Ability, Anita Sneed; Outstanding Achievement in Mathematics, James Gray; Outstanding Business Student, Bonnie Anderson; Best Girl Athlete, Susan Wright. Outstanding Activities, Nicole Steadman; Outstanding Athlete, Mike Waxman; Outstanding Girl Journalist, Marsha Shackelford. The best football backer was Don Wood; Tenth Grade English Award, Margaret Lee; Scholastic and Athletic Ability, Wayne Wever; Service, Jerry Holland; Marilyn Johnson. MUSCLES COUNT The Miami News All-City Athletic Awards went to Michael Waxman, football; Ronald Pascarella, Wayne Wever, track; Robert Lee, swimming. The Miami Herald All-City Athletic awards recognized Ronald Pascarella, Robert Lee. Don Barber, president of Student Council, received the student government award, and Zalmon Newmark was presented with the National Forensic award. Dana Perry won the Gold Coast Golf championship in a contest between Dade and Broward with a score of 72, or one under par. Previously he had topped all comers in the Dade County high school individual championship meet with 76. Senior James Gray won the math contest sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America and the Society of Actuaries for the second year. Second place winner at Southwest was William Trotter, another senior, and third place went to junior Geoffrey Manley. Top scorer in the sophomore class was Helen Cooper. Each received a medal. POETS HONORED Pegasus, winged horse of poetry, gave six talented poetry readers a royal ride to victory during the Poetry Reading contest recently. Anita Klein senior placed first with a dramatic reading. Second place went to Michele Adel and Fred Abrams was third. James Tressler, who has placed first in his class for two consecutive years, again won first; Darlene Herreran was second and Cheryl Ennis was third. The sophomore class was represented by Carol Lindstrom, first place; Michael Klynt, second, and James Clark, third. David Klapper is one of 10 students in the Miami area selected for honorable mention in the 1961 Future Scientists of America Awards program.
WIN A VACATION
Mothers, here's that chance for that boy or girl of yours to win a free summer vacation to famous Camp Clearwater. All the youngster who must be between 7-15 years old, has to do is sit down and write an essay of 25 words or less on "Why I would like to spend a summer vacation at Camp Clearwater." The Central Shopping Plaza Merchants' association will sponsor the contest with the winners being awarded a total of eight weeks vacation at the popular Florida camp.
