We Don't Forget Our Teachers

GUIDING CUCUMBER DOWN IS GUIDANCE SECRETARY MRS. RUBY HARRIS. Staff Photos by Raymond Lang It took 40 pounds of ham, 162 pounds of candied yams and green beans, 28 cherry pies, and 600 buns to honor the teachers recently at Coral Gables High. Because that's how much food was consumed at the annual luncheon given for them by the PTA and room mothers. There were about 225 persons there, of whom 130 were teachers. Since the program's theme was "Let Freedom Ring," there was a long, red, white and blue banner with that motto hanging above the table of honor. Behind the table on the wall, were red and blue stars clustered around a large gold bell. Each table carried a red, white and blue paper hat and tiny gumdrops, an American flag sticking in each one. A luncheon means work. For the kitchen crew, headed by Mrs. Laura Olson, it meant - after all the teachers PTA and room mothers had long gone, washing: 1250 pieces of crockery 1,100 pieces of silverware. Anyone for a luncheon? SOME OF THE TEACHERS are seen here enjoying their lunch, a small token of thanks for the thousand-and-one ways they step into our youngsters' lives and help prepare them for tomorrow. 'YOU WAIT AND SEE if what I say doesn't happen' Vincent Cavallo (left) a Spanish teacher seems to be saying to Jerrold Young, looking out pensively over his coffee cup. Young also teaches Spanish. 'A SECOND HELPING?' ASKS EARL BASSETT, TEACHER. 'SO NICE TO SEE YOU' says librarian Lois T. Cole, seated, as she clasps the hand of Mary Ions, English department chairman. 'HMMMM, THAT'S GOOD' these teachers seem to say as they enjoy their lunch. From the left are Davida Pippinger, a television teacher's assistant; Donna Williams, TV English teacher; and Hazel Theriautt, also a TV assistant. CHAIRMAN WAS MRS. JOHN MONTGOMERY. PHYSICS TEACHER OLGA PAPPATHEODOROU. THIS GAL WORKS hard in the kitchen when a luncheon's given. So taking time out for fun as she sports one of the decoration hats with a smile to match, is Mrs. Gertrude Huff.
