Winner Is George Drummond South Miami Garden Club Awards Him Scholarship
The South Miami Garden Club celebrated its 10th birthday Tuesday of last week by giving a semester-scholarship to a student at Dade County Junior College. The club, made up of both SW and Gables women, presented the scholarship to pre-agricultural student George Drummond of Opa-locka during a monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Sydney A. Craig, 6200 Riviera Dr. The club's main project the last three years was the assembling of an unusual garden for children at the Lighthouse for the Blind, said the President, Mrs. Ann M. Burdin, 740 Tibidabo Ave. The garden was unusual, said Mrs. Burdin, because the plants were specially picked for youngsters who cannot see; plants were chosen for texture, which can be felt, and fragrance, which can be smelled. Mrs. Burdin said it took about three years from the time the club first conceived the idea to calling nurseries to donate plants to laying out the garden. Members of the Garden Club are: Mrs. Craig; Mrs. Burdin; Mrs. Arthur Wronskie, 7700 SW 47th Pl.; Mrs. Harold Dorn, 7950 Sunset Dr.; Mrs. Jesse N. Koehler, 1044 Coral Way. Mrs. F. M.
