COUNTY LINE with Ed Knight

REASONS to make you want to give up: Dr. Gordon C. Ring, University of Miami professor of physiology, said recently that vigorous exercise and hard work may make you feel better. But it won't help you to live longer. SPEAKING before a national conference for Health Care of the Aged, Dr. Ring said that it has not been demonstrated that exercise prolongs useful life. "In fact, quite the opposite can be shown to be true for heavy work," the doctor said. "THE STATISTICS for boilermakers, blacksmiths and the like clearly show that their life span is less than that of the general population," Dr. Ring told the conference. NOW ISN'T that something to cut out of the paper and pin to the wall? Here we are getting advice from everyone from the president on down on physical fitness and along comes this tidbit of wisdom. Everyone says we are getting flabby, but according to Dr. Ring, what's the difference? AS LONG AS I've lived, the adage has been that hard work is good for the body and the mind. Good physical fitness programs are in demand today. We are told that the Europeans and the Asians are beating us in hard work and physical fitness. But what's the difference? MEN ARE taking up bicycle riding, rowing and round-the-block running to keep in shape, but it's all in vain, fellows. You're wasting your time. Come home from the office, flop down in the chair and turn on the television. It's the best thing for you, according to Dr. Ring. ME? I'M GOING to put my tennis shoes away and forget about that spare tire around the middle. I'll watch you guys playing at the tennis courts and in touch football games. But no more after-dinner walking for me. It's too strenuous. No more hard work for me. I was getting tired anyway. ★ ★ ★ MORE ON Dadeland Shopping Center, under construction and due to be finished this year at Palmetto Expressway and North Kendall Dr.: the center will be a "catering" center, according to advance notices. THERE WILL be benches, drinking fountains, landscaped areas in the malls and piped music. The basic center will contain 56 stores and 245,000 square feet, exclusive of the two-story Burdines at the east end. IT IS anticipated that another department store will be established on the western end of the center, thus making the center more of a draw for the thousands of potential customers. A Federal savings and loan association is scheduled to go on the west side of Kendall Drive opposite the shopping center. ★ ★ ★ WE'VE KNOWN that Metro was reading a stepped-up recreation program. We've known the program included swimming pools, more boating ramps and a golf course or two. Now the straight dope is here and it looks good. YOU WEST Daders are going to get a swimming pool north of SW 48th Street and west of SW 102nd Avenue valued at $70,000 and a camping hammock costing about $175,000 farther west. A central regional recreation center, valued at $140,000 will be at what is now Tamiami Airport. This will include a sports stadium. SORRY TO SAY the golf courses and the boating facilities will be in the northern end of the county. But South Dade is due for increased boating facilities. They just haven't been announced yet. If these programs materialize Metro will gain many new friends.

Moms Will Guard Crossings

A group of Westchester area women have volunteered to act as school crossing guards until the County erects a permanent protected crossing at West Miami Junior High School. Among the first to sign up for duty are Mrs. Maurice E. Glick, who spearheaded the move to get a school crossing light, and Mrs. James Trower, Mrs. John Hilyard, Mrs. John Gryder, Mrs. Maria McCarty, Mrs. Frank Parker, Mrs. Louis Lerner and Mrs. Edgar Joines. County officials have assured Mrs. Glick that work on the dangerous intersection with the Palmetto By-Pass at Coral Way will begin this week, Mrs. Glick said. The work necessitates moving an existing light from the east side of the school to a point just west of the express-way on Coral Way.

APFELBAUM NAMED
