Scientists Have Fling At Christopher Columbus

By PAT GLEASON HI 4-5043 Amateur scientists took to the field and school officials took to the shelters as Christopher Columbus High School opened its first science exposition of the year. The button-pushing, knob-turning, switch-flipping exposition honored some 99 projects produced by the student body. Held for the purpose of stimulating the creative minds of modern day youth, the fair was heralded a success resulting from presentation of many original and prize winning entries. This was the first of a series of three science displays, the others to be held in February and March. Ultimate Goal The ultimate goal of these presentations is to find the right projects to be entered in the final science fair, the annual County Science Fair, held at Dinner Key. Last year, unfortunately, Columbus took only honorable mentions but looks ahead this year to taking a substantial prize. All projects were judged two-fold, for time and effort, together with originality. Judges were Brother Clemet, director of sciences for the school, and Mr. Egan, who teaches freshman biology. In the different divisions, Lawrence Oleck took first prize in chemistry. George Alfred took first in electronics. First in physics was taken by Lloyd McAvory. First for engineering was given to John Pope. Zoology (man) was won by Dave Vance. Zoology, other than man, was won by Peter Zarzechi and the most outstanding in psychology and botany were John Devanna and Jeffery Gills, respectively. Lecture Week Last week could be termed lecture week at Columbus for an unusual number of orations were given. The first to greet the student assembly was the United States Coast Guard. Lieutenant Prince from the Coconut Grove base discussed the advantages of becoming an active member of the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Father Brubaker, previous pastor of Little Flower Church in Coral Gables, gave a talk on vocations, and Brother Steven, provincial counsel of the Marist Brothers, visiting from New York, spoke on "The Life of a Brother." Brother Stephen, by the way, an excellent tenor, sang a few rounds from Oklahoma before leaving. Another event for Columbus is coming up on Dec. 10. The Football Banquet will be held to honor Columbus' growing football force. Awards for outstanding players in both varsity and junior varsity will be presented. Dale Hall, coach of Army, and Stan Musial, twice All-American baseball player, are expected to be guest speakers.
