Rusty Smith Is The Winner In Largest Sophomore Class Election

By LAURA HENRY Twenty students, the largest number of candidates ever to compete for class offices at Southwest High School, lent excitement to the sophomore class election recently. After a touch-and-go run-off, Rusty Smith captured the presidency from Judy Peeple. Rusty, from Riviera Junior High, was a letterman in football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball in eighth grade. He also was a band officer and received a band letter. As a freshman, Rusty was captain of the band, president of his homeroom and served on the Student Council cabinet. He won letters on four athletic teams, receiving the American Legion Award for the most outstanding student, and was voted by the freshman class as Best All Around. Other presidential candidates were: Jerri Knight, Jack Bishop, Helen Hancock and Brenda Hanlin. New Vice President The new vice president, Carol Lindstrom, was vice president of her class in California. In the eighth grade at West Miami Junior High, she was on the Student Council and won the Women's Club Award for the Outstanding eighth grade girl. She also narrated and directed a TV history panel on Channel 2. In the ninth grade, Carol was president of Debs and Concert Chorus and activities chairman of the Student Council. While still a freshman she won the DAR award for excellence in history. This year she is president of her homeroom. Among the vice president contenders were: Merle Katz, Laura Beckwith and Bob Hatch. Kathy Garry was elected Secretary in the seventh grade, Kathy was in the "Southwest Scandals" and the following year at Riviera Junior High she sang in the Riviera Review. In ninth grade, she was an "A" corps majorette. As a freshman she received the Art Award and was chosen Most Outstanding Art Student. Kathy also received a superlative. She was voted Most Popular by her class. This year at Southwest, Kathy was inducted into Art Honor Society. Others vying for this office were: Rhea Goldman, Bette Brantana, Peggy Brantly, Lynn Reiner, Donna Fouch and Gretchen Greene. Elected Treasurer Kenny Golden, treasurer, is from West Miami Junior High. In seventh grade, he was treasurer of his homeroom, a member of Junior Thespians, and president of a pre-teen organization. In eighth grade, Kenny was on the newspaper staff, a Student Council representative, and received the Eagle Scout award. Kenny was elected vice president of the Freshman class, a member of Student Council cabinet, a charter member of Junior National Honor Society, and captain of the Courtesy Corps. He also received second place ribbon in the South Florida Industrial Arts Exhibit for a printing exhibit. He was awarded the Lion's Club award at West Miami for leadership and citizenship. Also a superlative, he was voted the boy who did the most for the school and the ninth grade class. Others running for office were: Linda Prusoff and Carol Curran. Aid To The Keys The Southwest Home Economics Department and Future Homemakers of America are helping the Junior Red Cross with the drive for toyless children on the Keys. Later this year the Home Economics Department will make cookies for the elderly. The money for toy material comes out of the enrollment fund. Southwest Junior Red Cross Chapter is now holding an enrollment drive. A new Southwest Sophomore, Chris Selin, spent two years in Karachi, Pakistan, where her father worked with the government aid program.

All tests and worksheets are sent from there to the University of Nebraska to be graded as part of their correspondence course. Mothers with college degrees compose the faculty. Because of the torrid climate, which sometimes reaches 120 degrees, school ends in May with the school day closing at 12:30

1000 Take Part In Children's Book Week

The Coral Gables Public Library is delighted to announce the success of the National Children's Book Week program which was held nationally from Nov. 13 through 19. Response to the program at the Coral Gables Public Library was so enthusiastic that our celebration was extended through Nov. 29. Approximately 1000 children, parents and teachers visited the Children's Department for the daily programs. We are so pleased with the cooperation of Merrick Demonstration and Coral Gables and St. Theresa Elementary Schools in encouraging the children to become familiar with their library by these field trips. Easy Books The second and third graders were introduced to the new easy books during storytelling sessions conducted by Mrs. Barbara W. Frink, children's librarian. Young actors and actresses of the Junior Repertory Theatre, under the direction of Mrs. Ester J. Brezo, presented delightful, dramatic excerpts from such well-known stories as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," "Cinderella" and "The Wizard of Oz" to the fourth and fifth grade students. Special Performances Special performances of "Hansel and Gretel," "One Hundred Dresses," "Little Women," and a repeat performance of "Tom Sawyer" were presented on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Coral Gables Woman's Club for an audience of over 100 children and their parents.
