Gables Man Is Fined For Drunk Driving

A Coral Gables man was fined $115 and costs in Metro Court Nov. 28 on charyes of drunk and careless driving filed after a three-car accident Sunday at 2321 Ponce de Leon Blvd. Charles D. Eaves, 40, of 504 Aragon, also had his driver's license suspended for 90 days and received credit for two days spent in jail awaiting trial. Also arrested in the same accident, but not tried Monday, was William C. Vance, 49, of 3141 Carter. He was charged with careless driving. According to Officer Henry Porterfield, Eaves was northbound on Ponce and struck the Vance car as it pulled out of a parking space. The Vance car was shoved into a third car driven by Elizabeth W. Spencer, 44, of 1803 SW Fifth St., which was parked on Ponce. Damage to Eave's car was estimated at $150. The Vance car sustained $300 damage and the Spencer car $200.

Who Said Tourists Are Worst Drivers?

The annual report released by the Metropolitan Miami Court recently reveals, some interesting statistics about Coral Gables, South Miami and West Miami. For instance: You would expect fines in Coral Gables which received $77,813 as its share for the year, to hit their peak during the touris season, Not so. The peak in fines was reached in June when the city received $8720 as its two-thirds share of court revenue. The tourist season peak was reached in January, but revenue was far below, $7806. South Miami, however, went according to expectations by gathering in $4443 in January and a total of $41,516 for the year, which ended June 31. West Miami reached its peak revenue in April, $1213, and received $10,000 for the year. The Coral Gables total was 7.47 percent of the combined total for the 26 Dad County municipalities and the unincorporated area. South Miami received 3.98 percent and West Miami .96 percent.

Coral Way, 82nd Avenue Will Get Traffic Light

A new traffic light will be erected at the intersection of Coral Way and SW 82nd Ave. by Metro. The intersection-which took the lives of two motorists Nov. 5 when their cars plunged into the canal paralleling Coral Way -has been the scene of hundreds of other accidents in recent years. Joseph Mantinan, who lives at the intersection and who helped lead the recent fight to get greater protection, said last week the light will help, but more should be done. Main Thoroughfore Mantinan said that SW 82nd Ave., which is a main thoroughfare for north-south traffic in the area, is dangerously narrow where it bridges the canal. The Palmetto Expressway, when Trop- ical Race Track is open makes the situation at the intersection even more dangerous. Mantinan said that the dangerous condition will not be corrected until the canal is covered and SW 82nd Ave. is widened to four lanes to handle its heavy traffic. Palmetto Expressway The Palmetto Expressway, rapidly nearing completion in that area, will take a load off SW 82nd Ave., but lack of other main thoroughfares make that road appear destined to bear a heavy load of traffic. Motorists are now braving an unpaved and unimproved stretch several blocks long linking to Tamiami Trail. The alternative is to detour all the way west to SW 87th Ave., which is also in miserable condition, or zig-zag down SW 74th Ave.
