Gables High Notes / 700 Parents Hear Plans For College
Our principal, Mr. Rath, reported that over 700 parents plus countless students attended Coral Gables High's traditional College Night program Nov. 30. After a keynote address by Mr. Rath and some PTA proceedings in the school auditorium, representatives from over 40 colleges and universities took over. Following a schedule similar to that of a school day, those present had an opportunity to sit in with college representatives from three different schools of their choice for 20 minutes each. Afterwards refreshments were served in the school cafeteria. Gables' tankers, under the direction of Coach Bill Burrell, have launched their ninth successful season with competition in three AAU meets. During an 8-year period, Gables has contributed 23 swimmers, Florida's largest number, to the All-American selections, and racked up an impressive record of 144 wins and 9 losses. All Big Ten records are held by Gables' swimmers. Leading the Gables aquamen this year will be freestylers Steve Schultz and Hollis Caffee. Coach Burrell anticipates that Schultz will surpass All-American Jim Fitzgibbon's 100 yard Florida style free record of two years ago; Caffee is expected to make All-American. Backstroker Doug Magruder, the third of the Magruder brothers, "will contribute a great deal," says Burrell, and will probably swim for West Point next year. Butterfly Stroke Bob Clein has placed for two years in the butterfly stroke, and hopes to better his record. In the girls' division, All-City, All-County diver Judy White placed second in the state last year and is expected to repeat her performance this year. Two sophomore girls, Liz White and Martha Eney, are National AAU champions. Karen Greene is the top sprinter, Sharle Heinlein is the leading breaststroker. The versatility of Joan Robinson and Nancy McCleod shows them being placed wherever strength is most needed. Gables is faced with a smaller schedule this year, but hopes to end its ninth year with over 150 wins. "We're up fighting for the top spot in the state," remarked Burrell. The championship meet will be held in Hialeah this year. Gables also has hopes for its "small but tough" B squad. School meets do not begin until February, and, until then, the natators will be limited to once-a-week AAU meets. L'Allegro Taps L'Allegro is the music honorary of the Gables instrumental music department. Qualifications for membership include a 3.0 average for the preceding two semesters, an audition before the members, and, in most cases, a written exam. The main purpose of L'Allegro is to recognize outstanding musicians in the Gables instrumental department. Out of a possible 250 members, 16 were chosen. Those tapped are the following: Linda Bechtal, Robert Cherry, Peter Cronquist, Rochelle Drazier, Mac Evans, Russell Ferguson, Vic Fishman, Don Hille, Roger Jones, Chip Kern, Pam Knight, Leslie Medlin, Patsy Richey, Gene Stearns, Brenda Williamson and Cheryle Strong. The Gables High chapter of National Forensic League has decided to revise its constitution. A committee, led by Richard Schuster, is drafting the new constitution, which will reorganize the Gables chapter. GROSS

Carols To Sound From The Air
The carillon of the University of Miami's Merrick Tower will join with 15 student musicians to spread the notes of traditional Christmas carols over the Coral Gables area, Monday afternoon, Dec. 19. The UM Student Brass Ensemble will present a concert of Christmas music beginning at 1:50 p.m. To be included with the traditional favorites is Leroy Anderson's "Suite of Carols," which includes "We Three Kings" and "I Saw Three Ships." The concert's sound will be heard in the area about the University for "at least a quarter mile or more" depending on weather conditions, according to William Russell, assistant band director and the group's faculty advisor. The tower concert idea stems from the Middle Ages when musicians in Germany and England would serenade the citizenry from local church towers or balconies.
