Modernage Continues To Grow
THIS IS AN ARCHITECT'S drawing depicting the new Modernage site at NW 13th Ave. and the Palmetto Expressway. Furniture Corp. building which will stand on a 10-acre When Modernage Furniture Co. took occupancy of its present manufacturing plant four years ago, it was thought that the building would be adequate for approximately ten years. However, the steady growth of the company now makes it necessary to expand the operation to a new building which is scheduled for completion in early fall. Charles Giller designed the structure which will comprise 280,000 square feet of space. Webb Construction Co. of Miami has contracted to erect the building which, according to Martin H. Feinman, Modernage president, will cost well in excess of one million dollars. The building site, a 10 acre plot at local economy. The construction of the new plant coincides with projected plans for expansion which include three more stores in South Florida, two of which are in the planning stage. Executive, offices, furniture factory, upholstering plant and warehouse will be housed in the new Modernage building. The split-level structure will feature a 400-foot show window 20 feet in height, facing the highway, as well as a six-story display pylon N.W. 13th Ave. and the Palmetto Expressway, is now being readied for ground breaking early in March. Creat Jobs "This latest expansion of Modernage will create hundreds of jobs for people throughout the Miami area," says Feinman, adding that the company presently has a payroll of over a million dollars a year, which contributes substantially to the visible from four directions. New Frontiers Queried as to his reasons for expansion in the face of the present slump in national economy, Feinman said, "We are going along with the new administration, proving our confidence in our country by opening up new frontiers, creating more jobs, and inspiring others by our example to proceed courageously in building up a better and more stable economy."

Beautiful Hawaii Awaits | Luxurious Sea Voyage Is Beckoning To You
Tropical Hawaii and a long, luxurious sea voyage are calling to you. The Times and The Guide are organizing a Springtime Suburbia Sea Party in cooperation with Suburbia Today, the weekly magazine supplement delivered with your Times. The tour, via Matson Lines, will leave Los Angeles on June 2 and return to San Francisco on June 13. For details, see your nearest travel agent. Here is some of the pleasure that awaits you: The last swirls of serpentine have twirled into space. The last kisses have been blown. The voyage has begun. Ten miles beyond the Golden Gate Bridge, the last tie with the mainland is dropped when the harbor pilot leaves via launch at the lightship. The coast of California fades in the distance. That's how it will be for those who join the "Suburbia Sea Parties" this spring, aboard the SS Lurline and Matsonia. You'll have plenty of company - over a thousand persons, 700 of them passengers and 425 crew. Keeping things moving will be native-born Hawaiian hosts and hostesses who, besides helping passengers get to know each other, give complimentary hula lessons. Once at sea, the rush and tensions of everyday life are forgotten. Clocks, dealines, all petty details are left behind. Life aboard ship is a house party sort of existence - and one of the purest forms of "escape" left to a harassed mankind. After breakfast, which you can enjoy in bed if you like, there's a wide choice of recreation. Of course, those more inclined to take it easy can indulge in the more restful sports like bingo, or horseracing (the wooden kind). Movies and travel talks, and a well-stocked library are also yours for the asking. Every night, theres' dancing to the music of the ship's band, and once a voyage the captain hosts all passengers to a gala champagne party. About the only activity at sea regulated by the clock is eating - and even that is pretty flexible. In deference to seawhetted appetites, Matson dining room menus offer as many as 74 different things to eat for breakfast or lunch, and up to 90 choices for dinner. All of them are prepared by a top-flight chef and his staff of 74 assistants. Approaching Honolulu, a festive welcome always awaits the Luline and Matsonia. Colorful catamarans (double-hulled sailboats) shove off from Waikiki Beach at sunrise on boat days to greet the liners offshore and escort them to dockside. There, the Royal Hawaiian Band plays, hula girls dance, and garlands of fragrant leis - Hawaii's famous "aloha" gesture - drape all passengers.

Study Will Compare City, County Taxes
A study of between 10 and 20 pieces of residential, commercial and industrial property to compare past county assessments with assessments recently set was ordered by the Coral Gables City Commission. The move came on the heels of a request by Mayor John M. Montgomery, who pointed out that the information would be useful in guiding future Commissions in determining proper millages under the new assessment figure. General information revealed by the County recently indicates that taxes on commercial and industrial property will be reduced and the load shifted to tens of thousands of residential property owners who paid little or no taxes before. Although assessments may climb radically from the old figure, taxes may not fluctuate as greatly because millages are expected to be lowered by both Dade County and municipalities.

Mr. Watson, 'We're Now 85'
It was 85 years ago today, in a Boston boarding house that the telephone carried its first intelligible sentence, according to Bill Gale, district manager for Southern Bell Telephone Co. The date was March 10, 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell attempted to send his voice over a new transmitter he had devised, that his words, "Mr. Watson, come here, I want you," traveled over a 40-foot length of wire. "The Bell System has come a long way in these 85 years," said Gale. "There are now 60.7 million telephones in the United States in areas served by the Bell System and 97 percent of these telephones are dial operated." In the Coral Gables area, Southern Bell now serves 85,900 customers and 127,700 telephones, said Gale.
