Car Demolished, Two Injured In Collision

A car was demolished and two men injured in a collision at the intersection of Alhambra Cir. and Miller Dr. Saturday morning. John A. Cleveland, 23, of 1436 Dorado, whose car was rated a total loss, was treated at South Miami Hospital for bruises and cuts of the left knee. Also injured slightly was Joe W. Levine, 67, of 579 Forest Ave., driver of the other car. According to Coral Gables Officer Charles Harris, Levine was eastbound on Miller Dr. and failed to stop and collided with the southbound Cleveland car. Levine, whose car sustained an estimated $150 damage, was charged with careless driving.

Demo Club Admits Negroes

The board of trustees of the West Dade Democratic Club passed the following motion at its recent monthly meeting: "To accept all applicants without regard to race, creed or color and absolutely no discrimination be made in any activities because of their race, creed or color." The policy-making decision set a precedent for political groups in this area; it is the first club of its kind in South Florida to open its membership to Negroes. The action of the board was spurred by interest in the club expressed by Negro Democrats and former campaign workers; invitations to join the club have been extended to them.

Smoke Gets In Our Eyes

Smoke is getting into the eyes of Coral Gables residents living near the recently completed incinerator in Miami off South Dixie Hwy. and Douglas Rd. The City Commission heard the complaints recently and instructed City Manager L. W. Robinson, Jr. to contact Miami authorities to try to get the situation remedied. Miami had predicted a smokeless, dustless, odorless operation when the new incinerator was placed into operation several months ago, replacing the odiferous plant which annoyed residents in that area for years.

MEET THE SWISS

"In Switzerland, tourists can actually meet the people—not just sales girls and tour guides—but families on farms and in the cities," Bill Mason of Travel, Inc. said. "A few years ago, the Swiss believe that visiting a strange land is more than sightseeing and shopping. They contend that tourists should not only see Switzerland, but feel it. "A few years ago, the Swiss adopted a "meet the people" program designed specially to allow guests of the country to mingle intimately with the native folk. Since the project was a huge success, it has been expanded to accommodate even more of the growing number of visitors to Switzerland annually. Travelers have a wide choice of meeting people in urban, sub-urban or rural communities. Also, there is an equally large selection of tours available which would permit curious tourists to inspect anything from a cheese factory to a vineyard."
