What Bob Searle Wants As Mayor

The city's next mayor, Robert L. Searle, outlined his program Wednesday of last week before Coral Gables merchants. His major points: -Develop a master plan for land use which would settle the question of tall buildings for the Gables. -Develop a park and shop plan whereby merchants pay customers' parking charges and the danger of overtime tickets is removed. Develop a credit card system for shops here. -Emphasize a public relations approach by meter checkers when talking to violators. -Reduce the parking fine from $2 to $1. Searle was but one of 12 politicians to address the Retail Merchants Division of the city's Chamber of Commerce. However, he is the only man assured of election, having no opposition in the April 11 election. The dinner meeting was held at the Pub. Merchant president Albert Friedman promised each candidate three minutes to speak his piece. An alarm on the clock sounded at the time's end. Moderator Fred Hartnett, who as a former mayor is also familiar with the role of candidate, indulgently permitted brief remarks after the bell. All candidates took advantage of it. Among ideas advanced during the evening were: -Seek out a department store to occupy the old Youth Center lot and the present A & P site downtown, Bernard Weksler. -Remove the Ponce de Leon Elementary School, Joe Murphy. -Coordinate buses with county lines, Chuck Powell. -Conduct a South American fiesta here in the summer, Harold Cram. Weksler attacked the city's current advertising program as not aggressive enough. Robert Hildreth, chairman of the committee which oversees the campaign, disputed the point and a general discussion followed about how effectively the $65,000 is being spent. Searle said, in response to a question, that he plans to raise the appropriation in the next budget. This is the first year the city has spent money directly for promotion.

DR. JAMES A. VAUGHN Jr. of 5965 Ponce de Leon Blvd., received an award at the first anniversary party of South Miami Hospital. Dr. Vaughn, who made an "outstanding contribution to the organization and development of the hospital," was honored at the King's Bay Yacht Club for his service at first president of the hospital's medical staff. The hospital is a year old.

More Floors Planned For 'Skyscraper'

A high rise building that has had considerable difficulty getting off the ground, will grow to three stories soon. The "skyscraper" that never was is the massive looking onestory building on the southwest corner of Ponce de Leon Blvd. and Alhambra Cir. It had been planned for five stories back in 1958 and once before, but the plans never jelled and the building, owned by Ponce Alhambra Corp., remained stunted. Last October, the owners again got permission from the Coral Gables City Commission to go more than three stories. Architect for the two-story addition is Curtis E. Haley, of Coral Gables. The structural engineer is A. Harvey Baxter; mechanical engineer, R. L. Duffer & Associates; and Brown-Sells is doing the electrical engineering. The 138 by 100 foot CBS addition will have an elevator, air conditioning, a boiler room and steel stairs.

Owner Told: Meet With Zoning Law

The city has rescinded an order cutting off power to a group of residents living in an office building converted to apartment use without official approval. Parkleigh Commonwealth Enterprises, Inc., owner of the building at 100-102 Madeira, has been ordered to comply with city building and zoning ordinances. Eugene Davidson, assistant treasurer and building manager, said Monday that the violations are being corrected. Four tenants on the second floor will not be affected. Parkleigh converted the office building without clearing the Building and Zoning Departments. The building did not meet parking requirements as an eight-unit apartment house.

Write In Campaign Refuses To Die

There will be a substantial write in vote for commissioner Joe Murphy for mayor, it is predicted. Carl Turkington, president of the Coral Gables Civic Association, said so Tuesday following a joint meeting with members of the Sunrise Harbour Association, Apartment Owners Association and representatives of the Riviera section. Murphy earlier in the day, in addressing the Coral Gables Citizens Committee, disowned the campaign to make him mayor. Later in the day at City Commission meeting he said: "I would like to take this opportunity to put to rest the so-called write in for mayor movement which has commenced in my behalf during the past two weeks. "My reasons are two-fold: "1. Our City deserves complete harmony in its government, and to this end personal ambition must be my second choice. "2. Bob Searle has the necessary experience and ability to serve this City as its next Mayor, and in my opinion, he is better qualified for this office at this time. "I trust my friends will accept my decision in this matter, and continue to support me for the City Commission only." Commissioner Robert Searle is unopposed in his bid for the mayoralty soon to be given up by John M. Montgomery. Turkington described the movement as a "protest action." Both Murphy and Searle appeared before the All States Friendship Club earlier in the week. The other candidates addressed the group last week. A showdown with Metro over traffic law enforcement was called for by Murphy before the Citizens Committee Tuesday. "The seat of government should be at City Hall and not at any other place in the community," candidate Bernard B. Weksler told the group. "Tell Metro we refuse to go along with their tax assessment program and go along with our own", he said. Weksler said he would propose asking for a delay of at least one year in complying with the Metro charter requiring all tax assessing and collecting to be done by Metro. Candidate C. L. (Jerry) Dressel, proposed a five to 10-year program of capital improvements. He said no one but the taxpayers were to blame for the status of the program now. Something must be done to stop the exodus of City help to surrounding areas which pay more money, Dressel said. Harold Cram proposed that the Gables prepare for the day when the seaport of Miami will be completed. Charles Powell stated a four-point platform backing a strong zoning code; placing conflict of interest provisions reviewing the Youth Center operation and a program of road improvements.
