Check Forger Runs Afoul Law Here
A 20-year-old New Yorker has been turned over to Miami police for prosecution on charges she passed a series of bad checks, including one attempt in Coral Gables. It was the last try that tripped her up and led to her arrest, according to plainclothesman Herman F. Pitz. The woman was identified as Rose Marie Black, whose local address was given as 3614 NE Second Ave. According to Pitz, the young woman was picked up at Jay's Jewelry, 2348 Ponce de Leon Blvd., when she attempted to pass a check there. All the checks were written for an identical amount, $48.73. Miss Black claimed that they were payroll checks from General Tire Co. in Miami Beach, Pitz said, but a check with Malcom J. Randall, assistant manager, revealed that they were forgeries. Miss Black then admitted the forgeries, Pitz said.
Lowe Gallery Will Show 16 Spanish Painters
New Spanish Painting and Sculpture, a major exhibition of 51 works by 16 artists who have come into prominence in the last decade, will be on view at the University of Miami Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery, April 2-29. It will be previewed by Gallery members April 1. The show will be supplemented by an exhibition of works by members of the University of Miami art faculty. The Spanish exhibition was assembled and first displayed at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, which received a grant from the CBS Foundation to aid in circulating it to galleries. Considered one of the major shows of the current Lowe season, it is being sponsored locally by the Beaux Arts group. The exhibition is intended to indicate the diversity of styles and preoccupations by which some of the leading figures in Spain are developing their individual idioms. Ten members of the UM art faculty will be represented in a show opening the same date in the lecture gallery and continuing through April 23. A diversity of media and styles are represented in the works to be shown by Clayton Charles, art department chairman; Richard Merrick, Eugene Massin, John Klinkenberg, Jerome Frankel, William Ward, Paul Reno, Dr. Richard Aldrich, Roland Fleischer and David Milgrome.
Joint Registration
Joint voter registration between Coral Gables and Dade County was advocated by Bernard B. Weksler this week. Weksler, a candidate for the Coral Gables City Commission, said he was "appalled" when he learned that there are approximately 6,000 to 7,000 more Gables residents registered to vote in county, state and national elections than in municipal elections.

City Commissioner Jim Hess Endorses Bernard B. Weksler
Coral Gables City Commissioner Jim Hess announced today his endorsement of BERNARD B. WEKSLER and recommended his election to the Coral Gables City Commission. "Bernard B. Weksler," said the present City Commissioner, "possesses all the attributes and qualities that I like in a City Commissioner. He is capable, knows the problems of our City, is honest, sincere, and a man of great integrity." Hess, in asking his friends and supporters to vote for WEKSLER, went on to say that the candidate, a 39 year old attorney-accountant, knows how to plan for the future development of Coral Gables, is a firm believer in strict zoning enforcement, and is strongly opposed to high rise buildings in residential and apartment areas. "It is well known," said Hess, "that WEKSLER is an independent candidate. He is not part of a three man slate that is backed and supported by certain high rise private interest groups." Other reasons cited by Hess for supporting WEKSLER are the candidate's civic and community activities such as preventing the Granada Golf Course "give-away"; the exposing of tax "free-loading" of hospitals and other properties; the eliminating of discriminatory and unequal fees and charges on the public golf courses; the creating of the Coral Gables Recreational Advisory Board; and the spearheading of the Citizens' fight to reinstate Tax Assessor Thomas C. Blount. "BERNARD B. WEKSLER," concluded Hess, "is a fine example of an unselfish, public spirited and civic minded individual." Paid Pol. Adv.
OPEN LETTER TO THE PUBLIC TRUTH and or CONSEQUENCES BY BERNARD B. WEKSLER CANDIDATE FOR CITY COMMISSION
DEAR MR. & MRS. CITIZEN, You and I are vitally interested in TRUTH and Honesty in our municipal government. We cannot afford the CONSEQUENCES of electing to the City Commission men who do not have the best interests and welfare of Coral Gables at heart. The TRUTH About High Rise Dwellings! I am firmly opposed to the construction of High Rise Dwellings in residential and apartment areas. The CONSEQUENCE of any other stand on this issue would mean a highly urbanized crowded community with big city "Honky Tonk" atmosphere, which we do not want. The TRUTH About Conflict of Interests! I strongly support the adoption of of a strong Conflict of Interest provision in the City Charter prohibiting ANY City Commissioner, appointed official, or city employee, from financially benefiting DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY from any transaction, contract or matter involving Coral Gables. The CONSEQUENCE of any other stand on this issue would mean a repitition of the Douglas Entrance Street giveaway; the Granada Golf Course giveaway; vacating public alleyways; $178,000 a year insurance contracts; and unwarranted zoning variances-which we do not want. The TRUTH About BERNARD B. WEKSLER! I am the Independent Candidate who believes in standing up for WHAT IS RIGHT and in the best interests of the entire community. I am not and will never be a puppet controlled by selfish outside interests. FOR A RETURN TO GOOD, CLEAN, HONEST, DECENT CITY GOVERN-ENT . . . REMEMBER . . .
