Good Government Road Is A Rough One--Adams
"There's no easy way to get good government," Secretary of State Tom Adams told a group of Gableites interested in politics Friday. "We're a nation of laws," said Adams, "but laws are made by men." Adams was addressing members and recent graduates of the "Action Course in Practical Politics" sponsored by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. The secretary of state traced his own political career as a virtual unknown when he ran for state senator from the Duval County area. Praised Group Adams praised the group for their interest in politics, which he said will play an ever more important role in the future. The people, he pointed out, must take a stronger interest in government and let their elected officials know how they feel about various matters. "No onoe can be happy serving only himself," Adams said of politicians. The role of the politician is to carry out the wishes of the people, he indicated. But the people must make their wishes known by contacting their representatives in various ways. Adams explained the mechanics of the House and Senate and told of his unenviable position of being the first to be called on to vote while a member of the Senate, which has no electronic voting setup such as the House. "When they call roll — you have to act," said Adams. He stressed the importance of being informed on all matters to eliminate the possibility of voting wrong on proposed legislation.
City Planner Role Foggy, OK Delayed
The proposal made several weeks ago to hire a consultant or consulting firm to help create a plan for the future growth of Coral Gables bogged down last week when confusion resulted over what the consultant's role should be. City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. told the City Commission that he had been under the impression that the consultant was to concern himself with high rise buildings only, but some of the Commissioners wanted to make the study broader in scope. The result is that no decision may come until after the April 11 municipal election when three, possibly four, new men will sit on the Commission. A majority of the 11 candidates have indicated that a study is needed to clear the air on high rise, but the question of a master plan for future development has not been clearly developed. Commissioner Frank Kerdyk recently backed the idea of a master plan and hiring of a professional planner, but the Commission at the time indicated a preference for hiring a consultant or consulting firm. Robinson was looking into costs when the problem of how extensive the study should be cropped up.
