Bids Asked To Complete UM's 9-Story Library

A $2 1/2 MILLION ADDITION to Richter Library at the University of Miami will complete that building. Bids will be opened today (Thursday) and if approved by the board of trustees, groundbreaking ceremonies will be held April 3 or 4. The only part of the building presently standing is the two-stories, costing $485,000, under the tower. The tower will rise for seven more stories. There will be a three-story addition as shown to the left of the tower. The main library is now in the Merrick Building.

Fla. Has 7 Degree Reading, Ice Floes In Its Background

(Continued from Page 10) which have become an important part of our American life and culture were established. England's judicial system, for instance, formed the basis for American courts after Florida became an American territory. England re-ceded Florida to Spain in 1783 and a new period of disorder and revolution began. Pirates infest the waters along the Florida coasts and at times occupied Fernandina and threatened to capture St. Augustine. American settlers intrigued, sometimes with the not-too-hidden support of Washington, hoping to annex Florida to the United States. Two revolutions, an Indian war and all kinds of troubles involving the British, runaway slaves, smugglers, filibusterers—and Napoleonic spies plagued the conscientious settlers, who were struggling to push back the wilderness and bring peace and order to Florida. After Andrew Jackson had twice led an American army into Florida it was obvious that the area was like a ripe fruit ready to drop into the American government's lap. Finally, Spain agreed to sell Florida, and in 1821 it was formally annexed to the United States. Under the leadership of men like General Jackson, William P. DuVal and Richard Keith Call, counties were created; roads were constructed (including the Bellamy Road which ran from the St. Johns River to Pensacola); railroads, for the most part mule-drawn; and a capitol site, the camping grounds of the Tallahassee Indians, was selected. Notwithstanding such disasters as the Great Freeze of 1835, which saw the temperature drop to 7 above zero and ice floes in the Suwanee and Apalachicola Rivers; the Seminole War, the longest and bloodiest Indian war ever fought by this country; and the Panic and Depression of 1837, which closed every bank in Florida, Florida's population grew rapidly, and it was apparent that her agricultural and industrial potential was unlimited.

New Emergency Phone System Adopted By City

A new emergency phone system was turned over to the city of Coral Gables by the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co. Tuesday. The system, which has been installed in 50 different locations, principally in the downtown area, replaces the old fire alarm system which was destroyed by hurricane Donna last fall. Also put into use for the first time was a recently completed communications room at the Police Station which incorporates the emergency telephone system. Main advantage oof the new system is that it can be used for all types of emergency calls and will reduce the number of false alarms.
