3 Coral Gables High School Seniors In Top Scholastic Circle

By LESLIE GROSS Last week, the National Association of Secondary-School Principals, sponsors of the National Honor Society, announced the names of students across the nation who had scored especially high on both the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude test and the General Aptitude Test. Of six Gables NHS members who were eligible to participate in the GAT, three, Maxine Master, Sandra Burt, and Leslie Gross, were notified their scores rendered them eligible for a number of scholarships. The winners will be announced some time in May. Gables swimmers romped over Southwest High School. The boys winning 61-32 and the girls victorious 63-33. First place in diving was taken by Gables Judi White. Other outstanding girls in the meet were Martha White and Martha Eney. Scholarships Offered Miss Katherine Kamp, a Gables Senior has been awarded a $1000 scholarship to attend Tulane University this fall. Another schoalrship, a $2000 stipend to Sophie Newcomb, has been offered Maxine Master. The Gables Choral Department outdid itself at the recent State-wide music festival. Outstanding for Choral Gables were Pat Gabriel, Vivian Benitez, Bill Brown, Mike Thompson, Jill Nicholson and Margaret Lane. The Cavallette Musical held March 23 and 24 was a resounding success. All those whose efforts made it possible should be sincerely thanked. Two girls in Future Nurses of America have been chosen as delegates to attend the annual state convention held in Sarasota. They are: Jeanne Winston and Joy Lucke. Florida's District Convention of Key Club International got under way March 23-25 in Jacksonville. Gables member Wade Cole ran for treasurer. Walt Tullis and Alex Galenes were selected by Hi-Y at the YMCA Youth Legislature in Tallahassee. Wheel Club recently nominated Brian McComb and Jeff Tew as their delegates to the Wheel Clubs International Convention to be held at Lake Placid, Florida, April 7-9. Chemistry Club has just elected its new officers. They are: President, Jeff Platt; Vice-president, Eric Stoller; Treasurer, Bobbi Capp; Sgt.-at-arms, Steve Magida. X-Club has four new "trainees." They are: Arnie Sudlow, Bill Thompson, Steve Wall and Mike Donoghue. The State-wide results for the National German Exam are now public. Gables Student, Bill Wilson, placed first in the state on the third year level. On the second year level of the National German Exam, Gables students, Maxine Master, Leslie Gross, Eloise Melson and Suzanne Frank, copped 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th places. At the South Florida Regional Science Fair, held at Dinner Key Auditorium, Superior ratings were earned by Gables students Mike Zinner and Eloise Melson. Eloise's Solid Coordinate Geometry System has already won her Westinghouse fame on the National level. calender. Evans, of 1724 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables, has been installed as president of the Dade County Medical Association. THE HERALD Feb. 3, 1960 Doctor Shows Faith, Daughters Get Oral Vaccine Dr. Franklin J. Evans, Dade County Medical Association president, showed his complete trust in the oral polio vaccine Tuesday when he gave the first two doses in the county to two of his daughters. DR. EVANS Candidate Has Varied Talents For Politics If one candidate for the Coral Gables City Commission could get the Seminoles to make him a chief, he would have run the gamut of "doctor, lawyer, Indian chief." He is Dr. Franklin J. Evans, MD and LLB, well known local physician professor and lawyer. Dr. Evans filed just 15 minutes before the Tuesday deadline to become the 12th and last candidate for a seat on the Commission. The 51-year-old New York City native came to Da County in 1945, has practiced medicine in Coral Gables since 1948 and has resided here since 1951. He is a graduate of City College of New York, New York University School of Law and College of Medicine. THE HERALD Nov. 16, 1958 Lawyers Named To Probe Ambulance Chasing Cases A committee of prominent Dade County attorneys was named Saturday to investigate charges of ambulance chasing in connection with auto insurance rates. The committee was selected by State Attorney Richard Gerstein and Attorney Joe Creel, president of the county bar association, as the result of a recent meeting of some 100 lawyers.
