Animals
From Page 1 go back and forth," she said. "I stopped, held up traffic and told him to get in. I've had him ever since. He breaks up all the other dogs' fights." In the back yard she pointed to Duke, a shiny, sleek Doberman. "When I got him, he weighed 16 pounds and he was six months old," she said. "He had diarrhea and mange and was vomiting blood. "The vet said if I'd waited another day to bring him in, Duke would have died." A fluffy orange cat reclining on the phone book was a stray found by her son, Virginia said. "My son was at a dump, and the cat rubbed right up against him," she recalled. "He couldn't leave him there." Virginia said that many animals are abandoned in litters, soon after they are born. Others are females that are pregnant or in heat, or sickly cats and dogs that owners no longer want. "Either the owners go out of town, or the child is allergic to the dog, or a couple gets divorced and gets rid of the pet," said Virginia, shaking her head. "The latest thing is that the family is moving to a condominium, or they're going to Michigan or the Bahamas for the summer. "And Midway Mall seems to be the pet-dumping place for all of Dade County," she added. Save-A-Pet is circulating a petition protesting the practice of animal euthanasia by the Humane Society. The organization's most intense campaign is the abolishment of the decompression chamber, where pets who have not been adopted are suffocated. Contrary to popular belief, said Virginia, the animals suffer terribly. "There is nothing humane about putting an animal to sleep in that way," she said vehemently. Among other horrors, she added, the animal's eardrums burst, it goes into convulsions, it chews its tongue to a pulp and its eyes bulge from the sockets. All this occurs, she said, before the pet loses consciousness.
