Athletic department receives top trophy

Palmetto High Linda Fullerton Palmetto's Athletic Department has once again been awarded the Miami Herald's All Sports Trophy which is presented annually to the high school with the most outstanding overall achievement average in Dade County. Competing with 22 high schools, the Panthers have achieved this honor for the third consecutive year allowing them to retire the trophy. Senior Jim Brenner has earned the prestigious honor of Most Scholarly Athlete for 1976. He has upheld a high academic average for the past three years while maintaining an active participation in various school sports and activities. Results of the Student Council elections are in with the following students as next years officers. Jeff Kravetz has won as president. His identical twin brother, Mark won last week's elections becoming senior class president. Sherry Wheatley will serve as vice-president, and sophomore Sally Kay is secretary. Les Juenes Filles, Palmetto's girls service club, has obtained the highest PTSA membership of any club of Palmetto. This is the fourth year in a row LJF has been recognized for this achievement. Students graduating from Palmetto have the opportunity to bequeath their fellow classmates and teachers they are leaving behind their high school possessions of the past three years. Senior Wills will appear in the June issue of the Panther. The 1976-77 Panther staff has been selected. Jan Faust will serve as Editor-in-Chief. Working as Managing Editor will be Mark Flannery. Mauro Santos is Editorial Editor and Linda Fullerton will serve as News Editor. Feature Editors are Irene Klotz and Leslie Camens. Paula Schneider will hold the position of Business Manager.

'76 graduation marks end of Killian's first decade

Killian High Bill Kaczaraba. Killian's "Senior Week" is over now and now all eyes turn to the summer and the future. In a little more than a week, seniors will walk to the stage of Gibson Health Center at Dade Community College-South for their diplomas and another step toward independence. In a recent poll taken by Cougar's Roar staff writer Diane Savage, 73 per cent of this year's graduates will be returning to school in the form of college. Of that 73 per cent, 86 per cent will be attending in-state institutions. This graduation will also mark the end of the first decade in the history of Killian High. In the beginning, students were human guinea pigs for an experiment in a modern integrated school. Those early years were marred by racial tension and violence which, since then, has almost ceased to exist. For the those who remain, the class of '77 will be led by Sheila Gabriel, who was the president of the junior class this year Sheila served on the Student Court as an associate justice. She was also a member of the Judicial Council, the Spanish Club, and the Curriculum Committee. The vice-president will be Peggy O'Neil. As for the recent past, last Saturday night's Senior Prom "Mahogany" can be labeled a huge success. Five hundred students danced the night away in the Four Ambassadors' Grand Ballroom to the sounds of "Fire" and "Heros of Cranberry Farm." And finally, yearbooks are still on a sale. The book has 368 pages featuring a 15-page full color opening section. The Catamount is being sold for $16.

Athlete of year belongs to Gables

Coral Gables High Pam Mandel Jim Maler was named Athlete of the Year at the Miami Herald's All-Dade Athletic Awards Cermonies last Wednesday. Maler has played both offense and defense on the Cavs' football team and has a batting average of .421 on the baseball team. He will be going to the University of Miami this fall on a full athletic scholatship. In the Players of the Year category, Guillermo Hersman took the honor in boys' bowling. His average of 190 led the Gables bowling team to a county championship. Lori and Ed Ryder took the honors in swimming. The Caveleon yearbooks will be coming out Thursday, June 3. A Cavern during which the yearbooks will be distributed, will be held in the cafeteria from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. Admission is free, but you must present the blue card that will be given out to all yearbook purchasers in homeroom. You must also present an I.D. Those who do not receive their yearbooks on Thursday can get them after Thursday in room 504 between 12:22 and 2 p.m. A limited number of yearbooks will be sold for $15 on the day of the Cavern. A 12-page issue of the High Lites will come out during second period Thursday. The issue will contain eight pages of news, features, editorials, and sports, plus a special four page Senior Section with Senior Superlatives such as Best-Dressed, Best-Looking, Most Intellectual, etc. The Majorettes for the 1976-77 school year have been chosen.
